Hey, Im a high school girl from new jersey and i really need some help from someone who goes to wake. I've been doing my college research in the past few months and thought that i had decided that wake was my first choice school. Last week I went down there to visit. The campus was very pretty and the school sounded really nice but now im having second thoughts. The thing is that i have spent my entire high school career busting my ass to get good grades. In the last few months i have been getting really burned out on school. I hate the fact that i sepnt most of my childhood working hard or being stressed out about something. The idea of going to a top university and spending what should be the best four years of my life working my ass off doesnt sound appealing. With all the talk on the internet about how wake forest is really "work forest" has me having second thoughts. I love partying and i would really like to go to a place where i can party my ass off and enjoy myself. Is wake really that difficult? Am i gonna flunk out? Is it a party school or is it just a place where kids go and get a good education? The surrouding area also looked pretty boring... so that kinda sucked....

It really depends on the major. You can party hard and do alright in some majors. Of course, you still have to work hard and apply yourself to your coursework... this isn't ECU. Some majors, however, are very difficult (e.g. Accounting), and it would be difficult to balance academics and partying. With that being said, some of my friends who are ACC majors really let loose on the weekends. Other than partying hard on Fridays and Saturdays, students love to split the week up and party hard on Wednesdays.

Wake has a great balance of partying and studying (in my opinion). It is not like a William & Mary where students are living in the library on a Friday night.

Also, Winston isn't as boring as you think. There's bowling, mini-golf, golf courses, a mall, many parks and many lakes where you can have a good time and relax. Winston has every restaurant you can possibly imagine. All are within 15 minutes driving distance. Some of my favorites include the original Krispy Kreme, The Loop (pizza and italian food), Sonic, Bojangles, and Cookout. Cookout is AMAZING; it is a local burger joint with burgers, bbq, and excellent shakes. It stays open 'til 3am, so it is a favorite amongst drunk Wake students.

Just to reiterate my first point, you can definitely party it up at Wake. I would say most students (80-90%) party on the weekends. Wake offers a great education; naturally, you will work hard on your coursework. With that being said, there are ways to get around the heavy workload. Like at any school, Wake offers some majors that are easier than others.

Are the sciene majors like pre-med and physics really hard? (I know its kind of dumb question , they are hard at every school, i just had to ask)

Yeah, pre-med is pretty insanely hard. Lots of my friends have dropped it. It is at least as hard, but probably harder than the accounting major. But on the whole I agree with freakadeac, you can find a nice balance, but it is certainly not like my friends at state schools who can go out every night.

If you really want to enjoy your college party and city life, u should avoid places such as Illinois, Wisconsin, NC (Winston Salem) and select such schools like NYU, Columbia, BU, BC, UCLA, Emory (Atlanta), Vanderbilt (TN). Heard from students there that "C" grade in WF is considered a good grade among people, implying that work is extremely hard. Also you can always transfer anytime you want. However, remember, going to good schools in the places u want (ex. Columbia-NY) u need to have at least 3.7~9 there in Wake Forest. It is likely that u will not transfer to good schools with 2.7 gpa in Wake Forest. Thus, it all depends on you. Good Luck.

Trust me, there are plenty of pre-meds who party plenty hard.

Thanks you guys. this stuff really helps : )

mmm It also depends on who you are and what kind of hs you went to. My first semesters at wake have been 'easier' than my HS. I went to one of those 'work more or die' high schools of course, but i feel that I am really prepared for Wake.

... it doesn't hurt to apply.
also,
I'd like to point this quote that one of the other posters mentioned: "However, remember, going to good schools in the places u want (ex. Columbia-NY) u need to have at least 3.7~9 there in Wake Forest. It is likely that u will not transfer to good schools with 2.7 gpa in Wake Forest."

--- Going to Wake and being a partier does not mean you automatically will have a 2.7. The two biggest partiers I know actually have GPAs above 3.7 sadly, i'm not one of them :)

show915... You say that Wisconsin is a school to avoid if you like to party? Wisconsin is home to the #1 party school in the country. Also, your comment about transferring with a 2.7 really doesn't apply because most Wake students have solid GPAs during their first two years, and then they either plummet as they get into a difficult major or they remain the same. My point is that students who have below a 2.7 GPA after one-two years are rare.

This is coming from a current Wake student... A C grade is considered good only in certain courses like Accounting. I would be very upset if I received a C in a Communications course, for instance.

Just elaborating on other points made in this thread...

It's all about balance. I had similar fears when I went to Wake: I feared that I wouldn't enjoy the four best years of my life due to the workload. The first weeks might be rough because of the workload and the desire to party every single night. You won't be able to do that at Wake; however, with good time management you can easily party 2-3 nights a week (Friday, Saturday, maybe Wednesday as long as you don't have an 8am). Time management comes naturally for some, but it is also a learned skill. This skill will stay with you for the rest of your life.

There is a tradeoff. Coming to Wake means that you will not be able to party every single night like at other schools. Coming to Wake also means that you will receive an excellent education (and still be able to party) while developing time management skills. In my opinion, Wake comes out on top.

freak, I know that Wisconsin is a big party school. I mean in general.. the state it self is. She's looking for not only a party place but a place like a big city where people are crowded.

Commenting on premed again, I took Orgo my 1st semester as a freshman, and it was really not very difficult. People say orgo is the class that kills premeds, and maybe that's true for orgo 2, but orgo 1=not that hard. i didn't put that much effort into the class and had a great time 1st semester partying and still dlid fine. i'm sure orgo 2 is more difficult, but it's still manageable and won't consume your life...im sure of that much. science majors are tough at wake, but they're manageable. so is calloway. kids still have a good time and do fine. you just need to structure your time well and take advantage of the time you have during the day.

to add to my previous post:
i am not speaking about calloway on a first hand basis (yet), but merely what i know from talking to other people. it IS very difficult. that's for sure.

I graduated from Wake a few years ago with a double major (including a degree in the sciences) and if you are a good worker you will definitely have time for both work and play while at Wake. The trick is time management, and sometimes it's hard and during finals yeah you're going to have to buckle down. But don't pick someplace you think will be easy just so you can party more. Besides, though I had a good time in college I was only 21 when I graduated and I like to think that I haven't quite hit the "best four years of my life" yet. College is great, but it isn't your only chance for fun or partying or the best time of your life. Go where you think you'll be happy, have fun AND get a great education.

There are other schools with similar reputations where you can easily work a third as much, but Wake parties i.e. drinks really hard so don't worry about that.
