I did horrible on my SAT subject tests. Please help!

I just got back my Math 1 subject and I did worst than I had ever done in anything! I got 550. Below average. This has never happened to me before. I have always done good in math. Maybe not the greatest but definitely good. I never got below 90. On my PSAT’s I got 95th percentile in math. I don’t know what happened, I thought I did pretty good. Everyone has always told me that I was super smart and good at math and that I should go to Harvard. I really want to become an actuary because I have always loved math, so what do I do? Do I just give up on my dreams of being the first person in my family to get a real career. Please help, I’m crying my eyes out here.

I know its hard when you are disappointed, but try to calm down. You don’t need to go to Harvard to get a real career or become an actuary.

You don’t list any of your other stats but there are probably hundreds of colleges that would be happy to have you as a student and help you on your way to a career. Most colleges don’t require subject tests so its time to start looking at those instead. I suggest looking at the public colleges in your state as a starting point.

Why don’t you start a thread in College Selection — list your other stats for us and what you are looking for in a college, and we can make suggestions. Most colleges don’t even require subject tests.

Honestly don’t let a test score determine what you are/are not good at. Considering you did well on the PSAT, it seems that you are good at math, maybe you just had a bad day, or maybe the Subject test covered content that you did not go over in school (which is often true bc cirriculums vary from school to school).

If you really want to be an actuary, perservere through this and use it as motivation, there’s no sense in crying over it; most schools don’t even require SAT subject tests anyways.

Never ever give up because there is always a way to make a comeback. Don’t judge your life on other people’s thoughts. Judge your life on your own actions and decisions. Do you believe you can get a profession? If you do, you can do if with the skills and the determinations. NEVER GIVE UP @jakijakijaki
