out.
The belief that it is harmful to the Black community for authors to explore the humanity of our leaders can have troubling effects. At the least, it promotes the belief that our heroes have to be perfect to useful. At worst, it censors our full investigation of Black life. If our painting of that life are stock and cramped, their colors drab and predictable, the representations of our culture are likely to be untrue. They will not capture the breadth and complexity of Black identity.
8. The passage implies that Black leaders have sometimes been portrayed as being
A overly sentimental
B deeply complex
C above reproach
D without regret
E beyond understanding

That is a hard one. First of all, what does ‘above reproach’ mean? It means above criticism, as in a person who is so good or upstanding that they can’t fairly be criticized.

In line 1 the passage calls into question a certain belief that is held by some in the Black community. What belief is that? The belief that portraying Black leaders as human (i.e. flawed) is harmful to the community.

So since the author is being critical like this, saying that it’s no good for the Black community to portray it’s leaders as having no flaws, well that would imply that these kind of portrayals have been going on for some time, right?

Basically this author is advocating a realistic, truthful portrayal of Black leaders.

That makes sense.
