I didn't do anything the summer after my sophomore year?!

I read in an article:

"...make sure to keep your schedule busy over the summer after your sophomore year. Many students try to “bulk their resume” the summer after their junior year. Colleges realize this and see right through it" (daniellebianchi.com).

I did not know this, so all I did over the summer before junior year was take a one week computer science course weight) (which introduced me to CS and made me realize it was what I wanted to major in if that holds any and do tennis camp. However, this summer (before senior year), I am doing a large variety of activities.

Will this have a major impact when I apply to colleges? I'm really worried because I legitimately had no idea that the summer before junior year was just as important as the summer before senior year (or is this just untrue?).

Thanks for your help!!

Hi there!

Hmm, I don’t really think that’s the case. As long as you did something of substance over the summer (in your case, a CS camp and a sport) you should be fine. Several of my friends got into HYP and all they did the summer after sophomore year was go to an SAT camp and go to team practices.

If you do a lot of stuff during the summer of your junior year, I doubt the adcoms would hold it against you. I mean, if it’s relevant to your interests and fulfilling, then why not? I’d even say it’s a good thing. You can always decide whether or not to include a certain activity on your application if you feel like it doesn’t represent you in the best light. Anyways, I believe that this summer will hold a lot more weight on your application, so don’t worry about it.

Best of luck!
