What do you think, will the adcom think I am not committed?

They have it there for a reason ):
Call them and tell them you’ll send one?

well it says “optional”…

I think you can certainly be accepted without it, but I’m guessing that many applicants will submit it so that adcoms will get a better picture of who they are.

well my college adviser told me not to… he said my application was pretty complete as it was, and that an extra essay would most likely annoy them.

An extra essay won’t make or break your application. I don’t think the extra essay would annoy the AdComs because it’s Harvard’s only supplementary essay (most schools do ask for one). Since Harvard admissions is incredibly competitive, the essay just allows you to say something different and interesting. I’d say that no essay is better than a really bad/dull one. It’s sort of like the additional information resume. Most people attach one just to be on the safe side and to elaborate on themselves. If you’re in doubt, tell Harvard that you’ll submit the supplementary essay later. Best of luck!

If you feel that you have covered yourself well, then it is absolutely fine not to submit one. The adcom might actually feel grateful not having to evaluate another essay. Although most submit two essays (Common App + Supplement), many have received admission without it.
