I got a message today that my EA was deferred to RD. Funny, as I didn't apply EA at all. I guess that means I am not a candidate for the pres. scholarship? I got all my paperwork in ontime, too! My deferral stats are:
ACT 35
Nat'l Merit Semi
All APs(5s on all tests)
Strong EC's(church related mostly, plus Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, band, jazz, etc. 400+ Community Service hours)
Band, band, band
Major: Engineering
White Male
GPA 4.0UW, 4.5+W
Rank 12/645
SAT M740, CR 780, W 690
LOTS of Catholic related activities, including three years religious ed. teacher

This was an afterthought to apply to, based upon Catholic background. I thought I had strong stats for Nova. Oh well....

[quote]
A student who has not applied for Early Action, but has a completed application submitted by the appropriate deadline may be accepted under the provision of Early Action.

Yes, Lauralice, but that quote says ACCEPTED; They DEFERRED me EA, even though I applied RD. It's like they went out of their way to insult me! If they weren't going to accept me now, they shouldn't have said anything and just left me to RD....I never realized you could be OVERQUALIFIED to go to a school! VN definitely had the lowest acceptance standards of the schools I applied to, but I thought I might look into the Catholic advantage. I teach religious ed, was an altar server, now am a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. I am a peer leader, confirmation sponsor and am the youth rep on the church board. I have represented my church twice at NCYC. I thought it might be fun to go somewhere that Catholics are the majority for once in my life!

Same thing happened to a student here, albeit at a different school.....You may want to call them just to point out the error; not sure if it alters the way they look at your app, but probably should be straightened out.....

When did you send in your application? And you aren't necessarily "overqualified." Schools can defer/reject you for any reason so maybe there was something about your application that they just didn't like? Or maybe they had a lot of other applicants who were equal to you? I highly doubt they tried to insult you.

I sent in my app by 11/1 so I could qualify for the big scholarship, but put RD. My stats are definitely higher than the avg. accepted student on the profile, I have a lot of Catholic involvement and feel I had really good essays. But my specific point was I had applied RD and yet they tell me I am not good enough for EA, they are deferring me to RD. Why didn't they just leave it alone and put me in RD? Did they have to tell me they don't like me? My GC says maybe they could tell by my other school choices I was not really serious about VN. I am interested in VN for the Catholic aspect. All my other schools were top tier Engineering schools, I am already into several. I did try to engage the VN rep that came to our HS in conversation to find out some more info on the school and once he found out I had already applied, he blew me off, which was odd as there was no one else at his table(most of the kids in my Midwest city have either not heard of VN or else are Baptist). As I said, they could have just left my app alone until later.

Although you put regular decision on your application the admissions office treats all applications that come in by November first as early action. It says that on their website as well. Perhaps you should have waited a little longer to send it in if it's going to bother you that much. Just wait until regular decision and see what happens.

Hmmm...they just Overnight Expressed a package for the Presidential Scholarship to me! And my mom said they called me earlier, but didn't leave a message. My status is still Deferred, however. Interesting!

And I couldn't have waited to send it in after 11/1....then I wouldn't have qualified for the scholarship. I can't consider VN without it....

Bandnerd: I wasn't trying to attack you in the slightest earlier. All I meant was that I knew that Nova considers applications received before 11/1 as EA (as villanovagirl stated).

Congrats on the scholarship nomination.

Just as a mater of interest, why did you not want to apply EA in the first place?

To be honest, I was in a hurry applying to several places by a 10/31 deadline and I decided at the last minute to apply to Nova. I didn't really look into the explanation of EA and in my mind I thought Early DECISION(like at Emory)and just said no. Of course, now I know the difference! And I didn't think you were trying to attack me, although Novagirl was kind of belligerent up there! Thanks for the nice words!

I know I took the scholarship letter as an unofficial acceptance. I'd assume the same for you. I still don't understand the deferral..? If I were you, I'd call or e-mail just to make sure.

bandnerd~ i agree with those saying this might be about your being overqualified. i'm hearing more and more about kids being specifically deferred for outstanding stats. this usually means you're coming in much higher than their norm and worry you're using them, perhaps as a "filler" or safety? who knows. but you didn't deserve a deferral. good luck.

I don't think it's a case of being overqualified now that you got the Presidential Scholarship letter. I mean honestly, why would they reject a Presidential Scholarship nominee? I'd take it as an unofficial acceptance.

The "overqualified" thing is a little silly. Lot's of kids with great "stats" don't get accepted to schools. Happens every year, particularly at good schools who get their pick of kids. This despite schools wanting to build their "stats" like average SAT or ACT, etc. Its about more than test scores and class rank.

Well, it looks like my Deferred status online is a mistake. I just got my acceptance letter from admissions in the mail today and it is dated the same day my deferral went up online. Maybe I will call and tell them. So, if your status says deferred, it might be wrong! All that concern for nothing!
