Today i found out that the schools I applied for didn’t except me, so i’ve been very depressed over this. I just want to know how I maybe try again next year. I have taken over 90 quarter units(60 semester) so i don’t know what other classes to take, but at the same time I just want to know if its too late to consider changing majors or am i too late?
What schools rejected you and what is your GPA?
UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly Slo, and possibly UCLA. My Gpa currently 3.59 but i blame myself for taking the wrong classes for changing my major last year. I need advice and counseling
Are you at a community college or a four-year school?
Did you apply to any safeties?
I am currently at a CC (2nd year) I don’t have any safeties because i was too confident that i was going to make into UCSB. Even if i change my major to a bio or engineering major, would a year be enough to finish all the pre reqs from where I’m currently at?
Major: Accounting/business
I finish MATH 1B(2nd calc), Accounting 1B (2nd class), and Microeconomics (both GE and Major class for accounting)
You certainly picked the difficult schools to try and transfer into. Take a step back. Consider some other schools and apply for transfer for winter or spring. Deadlines are in June and August. If you rather, take the year off and re-apply for Fall 2016.
Whether to change majors is a totally different situation. Are you not happy with business and accounting? Don’t change because you think it’ll be easier to transfer because it won’t. Only change if you really feel that’s a s life path for you. Go talk to an adviser at school to see what your best options in classes are for changing (but make sure to add some more accessible schools to your list.) If you haven’t gotten your associates yet, that might be an option. Just know that schools do put a cap on the amount of units they’ll take so some classes might end up not being counted.
What transfer curriculum did you do? Did you do the IGETC? If so, transferring should be pretty smooth and allow you to jump right whatever your major requirements are.
Don’t be too down. You’ve got options. It may just take a little more time.
I think im sure that i want to switch to an engineering major, I have grown quite uninterested in business and accounting. The thing is that I would have 3 quarters of physics, 3 quarters of chem, 2 quarters of calc, and 2 quarters of both linear and differential equations to be eligible. Maybe its not too late to finish those pre reqs by spring of 2016?
At UC schools “counted” has 2 meanings. One is units towards getting your bachelors degree. Those are capped. The 2nd meaning is towards satisfying requirements (GE classes, prerequisites for your major, lower division classes in your major). All the classes you take count toward this, no matter how many you have taken.
Have you reviewed your plan and your schools with your transfer office? You really just should have applied more widely. It is very hard to get into an engineering department and getting into all the prereqs in order would be difficult in a year. You will have excess units. You really need to see the transfer office.
While UCs will only count 70 semester units (105 quarter units) of non-UC lower division transfer credit toward the 120 semester units (180 quarter units) needed for graduation, all courses taken count for subject credit (i.e. math courses fulfill math requirements, physics courses fulfill physics requirements, etc.) even if you have far more than 70 semester units (105 quarter units) of non-UC lower division transfer credit.
This also means that taking large numbers of units at community colleges will not cause you to run into the “too many units” problem, since community college units (which are lower division) beyond 70 semester units (105 quarter units) will not be counted against such a limit.
@ucbalumnus So you’re saying that required pre-req classes for transfer (physics, Calc, Chem, etc) are the ones counted towards the cap, and the useless classes i’ve taken will not count towards that cap? Sorry, just clarifying. =D
I don’t know all the ins and outs for UC transfers, but is it possible for Merced or Riverside to accept you at this point?
UCB…what can be done?
Also…if the student is on FA, how will that affect his FA when he transfers? Will he run out of Cal Grant?
You’re making this much too complicated. Think of it this way. Every transferable class you’ve taken will be used in determining what requirements you’ve satisfied towards UC graduation. Some count as general ed, some as major prereq, some for your major. This is always true, no matter how many transferable units you have.
Then they look at the total number of units you are bringing in. Less than 70 semester units? Great, all the units count towards the unit count needed for UC graduation. More than 70 units? They only let you have 70 units towards the 120 you need for a UC degree.
What have you done differently in deciding engineering is right for you that you didn’t do when picking accounting? “Engineering” sounds kinda vague, you’ll need to pick a specific branch when you apply to xfer. I hope I’m wrong, but this sounds a lot like the kids that were saying “I want to go into law” a few years ago because they thought it would lead to a high paying job, the details of what type of lawyer to be figured out later, the assumption being that of course they’d be fine with it as a career.
