I didn't get into NYU. Can you guess why?

I don't mean to sound pretentious or conceited, but I'm somewhat confused as to how I wasn't admitted to NYU. I have a 30 ACT, 3.96 gpa (uw)/ 4.54 weighted, most rigorous classes, fourth in class, two varsity sports for four years, leadership in clubs, etc. my essays focused n the fact that and NYU education was about encompassing the city as much as learning in the classroom. Can someone explain this? I know my ACT isn't great, but it's well within the middle 50. I've also visited so I have expressed a great deal of interest.

^^ Did you need FA? NYU doesn’t give any.

I applied for financial aid, however I’m pretty positive I would not get any so that should not have been a factor. Again, I don’t want to sound cocky, but I was pretty shocked. It seems like decisions have been unusually unpredictable this year.

How were your essays and recommendations?

OP

Did you apply to NYU-Stern? If so, their admissions criteria are higher than the University as a whole.

If not, based on the statistics you presented, I would have thought it very likely that you would have been admitted. Not exactly a safety school, since NYU has some unexpected results every year, but close to.

No idea why they didn’t accept you.

wannabe- my essays were, imo, pretty good. my teachers know me to be a solid writer. they also thought they were good. my recs were good… one from guidance counselor who knows me very well, one from amazing math teacher/mun, youth and gov’t, nhs advisor who taught for 45 years. maybe my essay topic was too cliche.

zephyr- I applied to CAS, so I thought I was reasonably competitive. I’m stumped.

Well, I’m not going to say I’m applying for FA anymore, since they apparently don’t give any. If it’s going to hurt me, I’m not going to do it. NYU isn’t at the top of my list, but my 3rd or 4th probably. I’m really skeptical about the strength of my application in general, though.

I’m applying as a transfer, that’s why my due date is later (in fact today)

Greg – if you need financial aid to attend, apply for it.

Though it is a bad thing to be denied admittance from a school because they cannot provide you financial aid, it is even worse to be admitted only to find that you cannot afford to attend. Worse still, to be admitted and find that you cannot attend because you did not timely apply for aid that you might have received.

greg - i highly doubt that i wasn’t accepted due to the fact that i applied for fa, because i wasn’t going to get a penny anyway.

i must have overlooked something/something must not have been as good as i thought it was. fortunately, nyu wasn’t my top choice. i’ll be attending bc, which i would have chosen over nyu in the long run.

NYU is widely thought to have a need blind admissions office with a stingy financial aid office. The result is that students get admitted with much less financial aid than they need to attend – effective rejections, although some unwisely take huge student loans to attend anyway.

No one knows why you weren’t accepted, overbrook99. You are in at a school you liked better. High five. Now, don’t you have some homework to do in your rigorous classes? If not, maybe you could go take the garbage out. I’m sure your Ps would appreciate that.

I’m not sure I understand the purpose of your condescending reply. I finished my homework yesterday, and trash day is tomorrow. How dare you mock my genuine interest in getting others’ perspective on my application.

Oh, for heaven’s sake. The purpose of my reply is to point out that there is absolutely, positively no way anyone on this site can shed any meaningful light on the reason you weren’t accepted. Really. No way. Congratulations on getting into a very good school that you’d have chosen over NYU anyway.

I bet. In any way, thanks.
