I really didn’t know where to put my question, so I chose College Admissions. Question: Is the Junior Statesmen Summer School a scam? Thanks everyone!

no, Junior Statesmen is an actual club. It's a club and there is one at my school. It's nationally known.

those other things are scams, though. but you can trust JSA.

Junior Statesman is not a scam. It can be interesting and informative to students who are interested in issues that it covers. It is, however, not an honor to be accepted into it. Basically, what's required to go to the Junior Statesman Summer School is to have the bucks to pay for it.

Thus, particularly non first tier colleges would be impressed that you spent part of your summer doing something academic. Many of their applicants would not want to do something like that.

Top tier colleges would not be impressed, however, because they know that it's easy to gain acceptance to their program. Also the most competitive colleges in the country have a hard time attracting qualified low income applicants. They have hordes of high income applicants, so if you are well off enough to pay for Junior Statesman, your relative wealth will count against you in admissions.

The high school board or cafe are good places to ask about things like this.
(In saying this, I presume that your parents haven't donated millions to build a building on campus, which --- assuming your stats meet minimum requirements -- would put you at a distinct advantage.)

Northstarmom, that is very dissapointing that colleges see people who attend Junior Statesmen Summer School as "wealthy." The majority of the participants are on scholarship and have fundraised a great deal. It would be extremely sad if their hard work (in fundraising) would be in vain.

It won't count against you if you can afford to pay for it. It is how you approach it in the college application process. My D is doing it because she LOVES government and politics. It IS her passion and this is a great way to get more. She does many other things that match that passion and I think this will show her commitment to government and history.

Is there a place on an app. to explain that you paid for the program through fund-raising or a scholarship?

essay......or put it in parenthesis
