I was told today by a teacher who was going to write me a rec that he wouldn't do it since I didn't waive my right to see it...is there any way to change this? Or can I just delete and re-do the common app? I haven't submitted any money or essays yet, but I have all my personal info filled out...

I have the same question. I heard that it’s better to waive your right to access, but that was after I already had clicked the box…

Sorry I can’t help. Does anyone else know?

From the common app website: “If you have not yet invited a teacher or counselor, you can invite them without entering an email address. This action will force the recommendation process offline and allow you to sign a new FERPA waiver on the paper versions of the Teacher Evaluation and Secondary School Report. You are responsibile for giving the paper forms to your counselor or teacher. You can find the forms in the “Download Forms” section”

Keylimepie, I accidentally did not waive my right to access by carelessness in the online release authorization. The thing is, that my school submits all the school forms (secondary school report, mid year report, evaluations) offline anyways and like you just said printing paper copies of the school form will allow me to sign a NEW FERPA agreement. Does that mean the old online one gets ignored if colleges see that I have ticked ‘yes I do waive my right to access’ in the hard copies of the school forms. If someone can please clear this up for me I would be eternally grateful. Have been googling my ass off over this.

This information is not easy to find. Try this.

Go to “Contact Us” page of the Common Application. Click on “Follow us on Facebook”. On their Facebook page go to Support tab and search for FERPA. The search results should have “I would like to change my waiver of access (FERPA) with the Common Application” topic.

I recommend to print this artice, because I am pretty sure I could find it in the Common App Knowledge Base before, but now I can’t.

Can someone link me the solution on this (I cannot find it; all I can find is stuff about naviance)? Cause I have made the same mistake (I am an international applicant, and my school didnt’ know about this at all nor cared), and now I realized I screwed myself by devaluing my recommendations (how crucial is this though; do they reject you out of hand if you don’t waive it?). I am now desperately trying to get this rescinded. Can your guidance counselor or teachers change this or nullify it by sending a letter saying you didnt read it or something?

If you are at a Naviance school, your counselor may be able to reset your waiver. If you are not at a Naviance school, click Help from within your account and follow the steps for contacting support. They may be able to assist you.

keylimepie, I can’t find the article after searching on facebook.

I submitted an inquiry to commonapp support. I’ll let you guys know what they say they can do. If they can’t reset it, I’m sure there is an another way to delete and restart.

The article is not on the Facebook anymore. Maybe they are updating it or are just bombarded with the requests? It was there 2 days ago and 3 days ago it was also in the Common App Knowledge Base.

Do you know what it contained? Did it have a solution?

It said that you can contact the Support Team by clicking “Help” from within you account if you want to change from “don’t want to waive” to “want to waive” and did not invite any recommenders. If you have invited a teacher or a councelor, you can delete the recommender then re-invite them without entering an email address. This action will force the recommendation process offline. You can then print the recommendation forms, sign a new FERPA waiver and give you recommenders hard copy of the LORs.

Let us know if you hear anything from the support team. I am wonderring why the topic disapeared from the Knowledege Base.

I have not invited anyone, so as long as this solution remains I, and other who have not invited should get it fixed. Especially if they had this support option before. Like you, I’m wondering why they removed it from support. I also don’t know why it’s so hard to change. I mean, why isn’t it like any other checkbox or field where you can change it before you submit. I can understand if you have already submitted, but why are they denying us the right to simply change our minds? It’s not official until we click submit…

I’m having the same problem. I just found out that my teacher won’t write the recs without the waiver, but I’ve already chose not to waive online… and she’s doing all her recs online too, so I can’t give her paper forms. I really wish it could be changed, because she is my best teacher…

Just an update… CommonApp support emailed me back saying the “issue has now been resolved.” I actually was mistaken that they hadn’t changed it because the waiver was still locked in. I was about to email them again when I double-checked…they had changed it for me. I wasn’t expecting that. So now, it is waived. What a relief. It’s kind of odd that they didn’t reset it. It’s also the only section that you can’t change. Anyone have a reason for this behavior?

Anyways, I suggest everyone who has made the wrong choice to contact CommonApp. I submitted a ticket and they fixed it within 12 hours. If you don’t know how to get there, login and click “help” at the top right corner. Click “contact support” on the right. Select “school forms” under “completing the application.” Continue to look at the FAQ’s and search database and click my answer is not there, unless it is (keylimepie claims a solution was once there.). And finally, click “ask a question.”

I think a lot of people have asked about this. When I did it last night, school forms wasn’t a category. So I just put it under “other.” Hopefully, they’ll post the FAQ back on.

hey kevinnnnni, I also went and refused to waive my rights without knowing what it meant. I sent a ticket to commonapp 3 days ago and they responded immediately saying that nothing could be done except forcing the reccs offline.
From what I read it seems like they changed the option for you. If they did, then it’s amazinggg. What exactly did you say, cause I sent them 3 different requests to which I got the same reply.

I did the same thing, accidentally not waiving my rights… would it be better to try to explain in the additional section? Or would that sound worse to colleges?

Well, I was hoping I could just copy and paste my message, but I forgot that I had submitted it as ticket on their site. But it went something like this…

Subject: “Can I clear my FERPA waiver?”

“My teachers have refused giving me recommendations because I have not waived my rights. Thus, I need my FERPA waiver to be reset so I can waive my rights and attain the recommendations I need for applications. Is there a way to do this? I have not invited or gotten recommendations yet, plus I have not applied anywhere. If not, can I somehow delete my application and restart? Thanks.”

12 hours later: "Please find our solution below. We hope this helps you and we look forward to helping you again if needed. Solution: This issue has now been resolved. Please contact us again if you need additional assistance.

Regards,
The Support Team"

Those weren’t the exact words, but the exact tone I used. Anshu93, did you submit three different stubs? If so, try replying to the ones you have received “solutions” for. Geee, I don’t know why they are SO stubborn about these rights. We haven’t even applied yet, and we can’t change it. Anyways, good luck.

I think we’re making a bigger deal than what it is as far as how the college views it. I’m doing it more so for my teachers to show that I trust them and am not nosy. I think it’s just one more thing to mention when you ask for a rec, to give them more comfort and ease. I guess that makes a better rec, which helps your chances but whether waiving the FERPA rights affects your decision- I’m skeptical.

Well it has been over a month since the last post and now the “Ask a Question” link on the CommonApp site is nowhere to be found. The Help and support contains a link to the Facebook account for the CommonApp, but the support tab there is a copy of the CommonApp site. How do you contact the support email to have the FERPA rights choice reversed? Any help would be appreciated.
