I don’t know if I should leave Temple University

I’m sure most people know that temple is not the safest. But recently it has become really scary as a student living off campus. There have been a bunch of home invasions near me and other crimes. I came to temple knowing it wasn’t the safest but even people who went to temple are saying the crime in the area is out of control now. It has been making me consider leaving but I just don’t know what else I would do. I just decided to switch to the fox school of business. And now I don’t even know if I want to go to temple anymore. It just sucks that I have to compromise my safety for an education. And because I can’t afford to live in the more safe places life vantage or the view. Which are apartment complexes on campus. It just sucks cause I like temple. It’s just a matter of my safety at his point.

Is there a question here? You describe your situation but don’t actually pose a question.

Does temple have on campus housing for sophomore through senior? It looks like they have Temple Towers.

Perhaps being on campus would give you a better sense of security ?

If not and you are that concerned, then yes maybe a new school may be needed. But note that budget wise that may or may not be problematic. Look around. See who will take students at your level - are you sophomore or first year ? Check the housing, all around area and cost.

Discuss with your parents. You might also discuss your concerns with campus housing, police and even your advisor, if for nothing else to get an opinion.

Only you can respond to your comment and answer the should I stay or should I go part.

I went to undergrad in West Philly, and grad school in North Philly, and lived off campus in those neighborhoods, all through the late 70s through early 90s. I had excellent “street smarts” from having grown up in NYC in the 70s. And still, I consider it a miracle that I managed to get out of that area having only experienced a groping assault on the street, and a burglary by the violent drug dealer living downstairs from me. Even friends of mine who lived on campus were held up at gunpoint when they ventured off campus. Occasionally, a student was murdered off campus.

Get out of there. Either borrow the money to live on campus, or to live in a safer suburban area and commute with safe parking, or consider transferring. Your safety and your life are worth more than anything. Look at the cost of transferring, and look at the cost of borrowing to live on campus or to commute from the suburbs (with safe, on-campus, secure parking, which of course you’d have to pay for). Then make your choice. But don’t just stay, playing Russian Roulette with your life, waiting to be the next victim in violent North Philly. Get out of there!

Have you discussed this with your parents? What do they say? I know I would not want my kid in a dangerous situation, but if you like Temple, maybe they would be willing to spend more to get you into the safer on-campus apartments.

Start looking into transfers and see what your options would be. If you are a PA resident, most likely any of our true state schools would be cheaper than Temple (West Chester, Kutztown, Bloomsburg etc) and located in safer areas. Contact admissions and see what the steps would be and how many of your credits would transfer. Do a little virtual legwork and see what your options/costs etc. are and you can make an informed decision to stay or go. Good Luck.

Temple only has guaranteed housing for freshman. Over the last few weeks, there have been safety issues on campus as well. It is seriously out of control.
It seems like you know you want to transfer. Speak to your parents and advising and make it happen. With the police shortage and the huge increase in crime, I don’t see things getting better.

Don’t feel bad for leaving. Talk to your parents. Put together a plan.

S20 had a great offer from Temple/Fox. Turned it down. S21 didn’t even apply. Several classmates took scholarships from Philly schools. Several have transferred out for the same reasons you mentioned.

Having visited the campus, I get why on-campus housing wouldn’t necessarily solve the problem. It’s a compact campus and the crime literally is on the borders.

I went to Pitt when the Hill District was a mess. There’s really a difference between good SA and actual, physical danger. Listen to your gut in this case. Good luck.

Definitely agree that crime in Philadelphia is out of control. We’ve been visiting colleges with S24 and visited a couple Philly schools (not Temple). We’ve written both off since they do not guarantee housing beyond the first or second year. There’s no way I would let my kid live in one of those surrounding areas. The crime will certainly start to permeate the on campus community, if it hasn’t already. Talk to your parents and find a safer option. As others have said, if you are a PA resident, there are other good options that are affordable and safe.
