I don't even know if I want to go to college anymore.

I hate school so much and don’t understand the purposing in going anymore.I am a sophomore and consider myself to be an average student.I have a 3.7 gpa and got 176 on the psat.I am just so tired of going to school. Its not like I am tired of it because I am stressed out its just that I don’t care.I don’t want to go to college if it is going to be anything like high school.I am losing motivation to study and rarely study for more than half an hour as it is.I know that if I don’t voluntarily go to college I will be forced to by my parents. My parents would probably shun me if I didn’t go considering I would be the only person in my entire family who didn’t go to college nonetheless graduate school. I know that I need to go but I hate everyone at school and school is so boring.Oh and they think its hilarious that I want to do online school so that isn’t a possibility. How can I stay motivated to try in school?

I am a high school sophomore as well, and I can sympathise with your apathy towards school; however, I do have some questions.

Why is school boring? What are your interests? Is your class schedule tailored to them if possible? I find school boring as well half the time, but as the other half is chock full of stuff I love learning about, it balances out well.

Also, why do you hate everyone at school? I do not know the situation, obviously, but I would suggest not being so quick as to generalise the entire population of your school; it may preclude you from meeting someone you turn out to get along quite well with.

College is not the end all be-all capstone of education, nor is it strictly necessary to have a fulfilling/successful life. I would encourage you to speak with your parents about your opinions towards post-secondary education as well as your current high school. However, do keep in mind that, unless you have a legitimate alternative plan to provide for yourself or what have you, they probably aren’t going to take you seriously.

Best of luck!

College is supposed to give you a chance to find something you love to do.

If you are a sophomore, have you looked into vocational school? It is interesting to look at the options for trade school, and many of them, like our local votech HS, also focus equally on getting kids into college as much as getting them a job after they graduate votech.

Maybe if you knew about alternatives to what you are doing in HS now, it might help you decide where to focus.

College isn’t for everyone, but it’s your best bet if you have absolutely no other ideas of what you enjoy in mind. What are your interests?
Try to construct your daily school routine in a way that’s a little bit fun. Play music in the morning, maybe join some clubs, try out for drama/sports, hang out with cool ( =/= popular) kids. School itself gets better, it’s everything else that doesn’t hon

That was me last year, but this year I cranked into overdrive, committed everywhere I could, from high level classes, to leadership in ECs, even to my social life.

Now every day is a challenge, but I’m always psyched for tomorrow cause now the challenge is real.

I don’t set goals, but people end up expecting me to achieve at a certain level, and that gives me more motivation than any personal goal would.

Every day is a challenge, but that’s the only way I want to play this game

Trust me, I felt very similar to how you are feeling when I was in high school. The thing is, college is a completely different experience. For the first time in your life, you can actually choose what kind of education you want to receive, who you will hang out with, what your schedule is, etc. A lot of people who hate high school find that they do well in college. There people are more goal-driven.

If grades bother you, then why not look for schools which offer narrative evaluations, like Evergreen State, Hampshire, Reed, or Sarah Lawrence (for women)?

Sarah Lawrence has been coed since 1969.

@northdad - My bad. I think I mixed it up with another college.
