Hello. I’m a freshman starting in the Spring 2015 semester for computer engineering. Now, we weren’t allowed to do any scheduling until the day we met our advisors which was about 2 days ago. Literally, the accounts are locked until approved. So while we had to wait, the classes closed up. I only have an English Class, an Art class, and a Computer Science class, equaling 9 credits. I need atleast 12 to be part time. I have an ap credit for calc 1, and the calc 2 class is fulled, and I cant take physics 1 unless I have completed calc 2 or taking it with physics. I’ve emailed the professor to allow an override into calc 2, then I would have to move my english to replace art. Physics is closed or only available at 8 pm. I cannot do that, I have to be done with school by atleast 12 due to issues at home. Plus I have an 1 1/2 hour ride home.
Even then, I will still have only 9 credits! I was told the Spring freshmen would have reserved seats in classes, and my advisor just told me check if a spot opens daily. WTF?
This is the recommended first term
Math 20100: Calculus I (3 cr.)- I have credit
Chem 10301: General Chemistry (4 cr.)- Closed up
CSc 10300: Introduction to Computing (3 cr.)- Got it
Engr 10100: Engineering Design (1 cr.)- Closed up
Engl 11000: Freshman Composition (3 cr.)- Got it
General Education/Liberal Arts elective (3 cr.)- Got it
The reason I’m in a panic is because this will delay myself a lot if I don’t get math, plus I won’t be full time which will probably remove my financial aid. What do I do???
If your school is anything like mine, then you can ask your professors for overrides into their closed classes and explain to them your situation. Likely, they will let you in, or see them during office hours.
First of all, figure out how not to have to be done by 12. That is part of your issue…most times you woudl have some sort of afternoon class. Also talk to the head of your dept or the Dean of Students to ask what they would suggest you would do.
It will be tough to have an hour and a half commute + have to be done by 12. Is there a child care issue? Can you find another way to deal with that? ALso ask yourself if being done by 12 is truly a necessity? Is it really someone else’s issue to deal with? For example, if you have to watch a sibling, then really that is your parent’s issue.
I echo @bopper in that you need to find a way to take classes past 12. I don’t know how your particular school is, but mine only had TWO time blocks that ended class by 12. I think there were 3 or 4 that either started and/or ended after 12. I think it will be nearly impossible for you to get all your classes before 12 AND graduate on time.
As far as getting into classes that are already full, either do what @shawnspencer suggested and speak with instructors regarding your situation, or just monitor the classes every few hours the first week of class (did classes start this week?) as people regularly drop classes.
Good luck!
I would definitely monitor the online schedule of courses to see if students drop the courses you want. You’d be surprised how many courses are dropped and added during the drop/add period. Is there a watch list in which you can enlist?
If you go to the professor whose class you want to register, he or she may give you permission to enter the course, and most likely, you will be given a slip to give to the registrar.
If worse comes to worse, you have no choice but to take the most inconvenient time because you won’t receive financial aid without being full time. It sucks, but you have to do what you have do.
