I will be a Senior when school starts back in September, but I have no extracurriculars. I currently have about a 2.8 gpa and i scored a 23 composite score on my ACT. My question is, exactly how important is having extracurricular activities? Will I still be able to get into schools? Is it too late for me to try and get some extracurriculars?

The only schools that consider ECs are the tippy top schools – ones that aren’t viable for you. Make an appt with your guidance counselor and see what similar students with your stats have done. Spend your time perhaps practicing for another ACT or to get your GPA up – do extra curriculars if they interest you. ECs won’t help you in any college at this point.

Unless you’re applying to the very top schools, ECs are not important for college admissions. ECs are important, however, for developing skills – including skills that will help you academically and socially – and for helping you figure out what your strengths and interests are and what careers/majors to consider. ECs also can lead to hobbies, friendships, and vocations that will enrich your life.

Are you sure you have no ECs? The activities don’t need to be school clubs to be ECs. Church activities, community activities, arts lessons outside of school, being on sports teams – all count as ECs.

Community service also confers similar personal benefits as pursuing ECs.

You don’t need to go to community college. There are plenty of 4-year colleges that would be happy to accept you.
