Hey all! I'm IBDP student and am year 12. I haven't decided what majors I'm going to take in university. I'm thinking of computer science (or information science).. but right now I'm not taking neither maths HL or physics.. I also take Korean A HL, Chinese B HL, Eng B HL, Geog SL, Bio SL... I know it is far from engineering majors, such as computer science..
So that is the biggest problem right now.. I'm good at maths and always get 7, but I don't know I can do maths for engineering majors..
Besides I'm sure if I can be accepted from universities if I'm applying for computer science or informatics majors.. I'm not taking either math HL or science HL..
So my questions are: is there any chance I can be admitted by university with engineering majors? If I'm admitted, can I finish computer science major successfully?
Anyone has any idea?
Thanks a lot~! (-:

If you plan on studying engineering you should have taken math classes through pre-calculus, i.e., Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry and Functions. Ideally, you would have started Calculus. However, the standard engineering curriculum assumes that you will start math in university at Calculus I. If you are not yet up to that level then the college would require you to make up the earlier math courses but they wouldn’t count toward your degree.

Engineers will usually take Calc I, CalcII, Calc III, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and possibly more math classes. CS majors differ significantly between universities in the number of math courses required. Some colleges take a very math intensive approach to prepare you for any scientific or engineering application while others focus more on common math applications in programming. You won’t know if you can handle the math unless you try. But, you should ask yourself whether you really have an interest in these subjects if you didn’t take the additional math or physics while in IBDP.

If you really are interested in engineering or CS don’t let anyone discourage you from trying.

Good luck.

Thanks ChrisTKD! I’m doing calculus right now… and I think it’s pre-calculus, or calculus I. Actually I started thinking of computer science just a few months ago, so I didn’t know that when I chose the subjects. If I knew that I’m somehow interested in computer science or engineering majors, I would definitely take maths HL and physics HL.
Anyway thank you! (-:
