I don't know wether to accept it or not

I was just accepted by Drexel's BS/MS program. Although it is good to have a MS degree, which means higher starting salary and more job opportunities, the MS degree from Drexel is not as prestigious as that from MIT or Stanfod...
My question is wether I can apply for another MS program after I have had one MS degree? Since PHD degree likely means unemployment....

An MS Degree isn’t a solid guarantee of anything. It’s what you do with it. Having MIT and Stanford on your resume is great but experience a lot of times trumps a name. It all depends on your field and what you do outside of class.

A PhD is necessary for research, teaching or sometimes consulting. You can apply for as many MS programs as you want anywhere but that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

The BS/MS program means you’ll do a BS first. After a couple of years you can decide if you want a Drexel MS or some other MS. It doesn’t sound like you have a decision to make for at least two years, so try Drexel for awhile and see how it goes. If you want, you can always do your MS elsewhere.

I disagree, having a BS from MIT or Stanford will open many doors for you, regardless of whether you choose to pursue an MS later on. Besides, if you have a BS from MIT or Stanford, you can always choose to do an MS afterwards and not be committed to Drexel.

Go to MIT or Stanford if you can. Drexel will not open that many doors for you. BS from MIT or Stanford is worth infinitely more than a MS from Drexel.

The OP isn’t deciding between Drexel, MIT and Stanford. He was admitted to Drexel and his question is whether he can pursue another, perhaps more prestigious, MS after he finishes a MS at Drexel. The answer is yes, but you might prefer to only do the MS you really want, so perhaps just doing a BS at Drexel and then a MS elsewhere will be more desirable to you. You won’t have to decide for a couple of years so you can earn your BS and see how you like Drexel before taking Drexel MS courses or deciding to apply to another MS program.

You could join, do well and then try to transfer to a more prestigious school.

Do MIT or Stanford even accept students for just MS degrees once they have a BS? I thought most schools only allow their own undergrads to stick around for MS degrees.

Some schools only award a MS to PhD students who have met milestones in their PhD program. Many schools, including MIT and Stanford, have stand alone MS programs. It is uncommon, among elite schools, to permit undergraduates to earn a PhD from the same department that awarded the undergraduate degree, but a number of elite schools, including MIT, have 5 year BS/MS programs.

Sorry i misunderstood the question. I think it is fine to accept and decide later on to pursue your MS elsewhere. Afterall, they can’t very well force you to stay. Like others have said, keep in mind that top departments generally do not award terminal MS degrees in the basic science fields, only the PhD or MS enroute to the PhD (engineering and applied sciences do, however).

I agree with leejwwc.
I am personally against BS-MS program (a.k.a. dual programs) since you have less time to do research, and sometimes you cannot afford to choose the classes you really want/need to take. (Personal opinion through experience). But again, you can always quit the dual degree program and pursue your masters elsewhere.

Btw, usually if you are already accepted in the BS-MS program, it is very likely that you’ll get re-admitted to the masters program later on if you can’t go to MIT or Stanford. More money for Drexel, and more options for you :).

OH ***! Where were you six months ago? :(

facepalm …come 'round tell me this in FEBRUARY…jesus mary and joseph…the donkey too!

Thanks for you all. Of couse, I can’t get into MIT or stanford at this time…since I am an international student, my poor English Skill is the deadly drawback(my math and science are not bad). But I am confident that after the 4year college studying,I will be quilified for those Top school.

Since Drexel need student to stay in college for 5years( with 1.5 year work experience which is very attractive). Then why not finish the MS degree in 5 years? When I come out of Drexel, I will hold a MS degree and have 1year work experience. It sounds awesome.

By the way, the BS/MS student can take 3 MS thesis, which means valuable research experience. Will this make me stand out when I apply for those Top schools?

Yes it would help. However, in my opinion, any research would help as long as its in your field of interest. If you really get involved and like what you do, your english, along with everything else will most likely improve. You still have 3 1/2 years to improve!
