I am a junior in high school and I want to go to Ole Miss. I want to be a heart surgeon. I plan to attend John Hopskins Medical School. I am very smart but I seriously DO NOT know what classes to take at Ole Miss and what to major in. Can someone help? Don't laugh because it ain't funny.

Well it is good as a Junior that you are thinking ahead. As a parent/adult I would like to offer some advice.

First, as a Miss resident, I assume you are going to have no problem getting into Ole Miss, good. IF that works for you as an undergrad great, dont let posters, especially on this board make you feel like this isnt a good choice, you certainly can reach your goals from there.

Second, While I would strongly encourage you to pursue your dream of JH for med school, realize that no matter how well you do, this is very competitve… DEVELOP OPTIONS!! There are great med schools all over the country , stay flexible.

Now to your question. There will most likely be a pre-med advisor of some sort on campus talk to them. Look at Med school requirements. Email some med schools, etc… I would say most PRe-Meds major in biology, Chemistry, or maybe something more exotic like BioChem etc … that is where to look. HOpe this gives you a start!! all the best

thank you sooooooooooooo much

It’s a bit too early for you to decide, but it should be something in the line of 1)what you are interested in and 2) what you do well in. Med schools care a lot about grades, and almost not at all about majors.

I will be honest. I have seen this 'don’t worry about what to major in.." idea and I was skeptical. however, doing a little research, it is not as far afield as I thought.

Having said that, if you look at Med School requirements, They require course work in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Writing and Computer Science …for the most part.

If you want a place to start thinking about majors, I think my advice is sound, but I think s1185 has some decent points. The Med schools may not care about majors -so much - but they do care about taking certain classes and that in turn might lead to a certain major for ease.

You have plenty of time to consider all this … good to be thinking

all the best

You only need your assigned prereqs to take the MCAT. If you know more, it might work against you since you’re supposed to answer MCAT questions based on the prompt alone. Med schools will want to see some upper div science coursework (if you’re not a science major) just to make sure you can handle the work, but that doesn’t mean you have to major in science. The major requirements in the humanities are usually so few that you can afford to do this and still have a lighter schedule than your engineering friends.
