I don't know what race to put on my application.

Okay, so I am Asian-Indian in appearance and my parents are both Asian-Indian. Seems simple, but my mother's father was portuguese. I was wondering what category of the common app portuguese and if listing myself as a portuguese will impact my admission chances going forward.

Anybody? Anybody at all?

It seems like Portuguese is a URM, which may help you. However, you should probably put your most dominant partial race. If you can pass for mainly Portuguese, then I’d put it.

Just curious, how can your mother be Asian-Indian if her father was Portuguese?

Did your parents answer the race (or is it ethnicity?) question on the census? If so, use that as your guide.

Dear dylandlima:

FYI: In the state of California, it is illegal to grant admission or any other status base on race and/or ethnicity. It does not play a roll in the admissions process in any way.

As for what you should select as your race, you are what your parents are.

I hope this information helps.

Undergraduate Admissions, UC Davis

I see by his/her other posts that the OP plans to apply to MIT, Duke, etc. Race is definitely noted on those applications. However, I do not think using the Portuguese percentage will help him, as that is a European, not URM indicator.

As it is always best to be impeccably honest, OP should list Asian-Indian.

I will be impeccably honest and list Asian-Indian, but I was just curious. It’s kind of weird how I am some part portuguese. Which accounts for my religion and last name.
