I will be going to University of Maryland College Park in the fall. I am trying to decide what I would like to study in college. I have always been an artist and I love architecture and design but I also love the science behind buildings and therefore I am also thinking about civil/structural engineering. Is there a possible way to combine the two? I guess in the future I would like to design my own buildings and act as the engineer for them. How can I do both without spending my life in school?
-Please don’t suggest architectural engineering b/c it’s not what it sounds like and it’s not what I want.
-Would it be possible/smart to get a B.S. in civil engineering, minor in architecture and then an M.A. in architecture?
-Is it possible to study civil/structural engineering while playing the part of both the architect and engineer?
-WHAT SHOULD I DO?!
I know there’s an emphasis called architectural engineering that exists some places. I know for sure it’s a graduate degree, but I’m not sure that it’s offered at the undergraduate level. Look into that maybe?
Architectural engineering is not what it sounds like. Its more like designing ventilation, plumbing, electrical systems, etc. for a building, not exactly what I want to do. I want to actually design THE building.
Do the BS in civil engineering. Take some art classes: sculpture, metalwork, and drawing, etc.
You may decide to get a job as an engineer when you graduate or you could apply to an M. Arch program.
I am not sure why you are all panicked. I know people who have a BS in cvil and then got a masters in Arch. The job situation might influence you in 4 years. Google M. Arch. And just make sure you get all of the requirements in during your undergrad degree.
This tells you about various routes to becoming an architecture =I would like to design my own buildings and act as the engineer for them.

So your plan of BS CivE, minor in Art and then a MS in Architecture sounds like the way to go.
