i dont know what to do!

okay so i think my counselor messed up my life! I have great grades but my parents dont qualify for help they earn good money but not enough for university. so my counselor said not to register to a university and to just go to a college, get my general ed, and then transfer to a university. did i make a mistake?? its to late for me to apply to a University. is going to a college/community college worth my good grades?? and what is the difference between a private college and a regular college?

It sounds like your GC recommended that you go to a community college? Is that right? That’s a 2 year public community college.

There are 4 year universities that are either public or private. For example, Harvard is a private university. But UC Berkeley is a public university. Both are great universities.

How much can your parents pay for your education each year? You may be able to go to your local 4 year public university and commute from home.

What is your home state?

What are your stats? (GPA and SAT/ACT)?

yea pretty much. but i talked to her on tuesday and she made it sound like i made a big mistake for not applying to a Univ.

well my parents earn about 70,00 per year together
and im trying to apply to scholarships but they need to know what college/ Univ. i want to go to and im undecided

my home state is California

My gpa is a 3.4 and my sat is a 1330

Is that your entire SAT? Or is that your M+CR SAT?

Since Calif is your home state, it’s too late to apply to Cal States. CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU Bakersfield might still be accepting apps. You’d need to ask your GC.

so my counselor said not to register to a university and to just go to a college, get my general ed, and then transfer to a university

* but i talked to her on tuesday and she made it sound like i made a big mistake for not applying to a Univ.
*

I’m confused. At first you said that the GC told you not to apply to a Univ, but to apply to a cc instead. Now, you’re saying that the GC said that you made a mistake by not apply to a Univ?

It does sound like you will need to go to a local CC and then transfer. Put that school’s name down on your scholarship apps.

Do you know which CC you’d go to?

its my entire
im just so confused cuz the person who guided me through this was my older sister and she moved out
and i didnt know anything about the SAT and ACT until october of 2009! i had no one to guide me through this

ok so in november 2009 my GC told me not to apply to a university to go to a college then transfer

and on tuesday i talked to her and she said " why didnt you apply to a Univ?’ and i said 'cuz you told me not to." and her expression was ohh no you made a big mistake

no i dont know where
i feel so confused i dont know where i want to go or what i want to study or what to do about colleges and my counselor is no help at all
another issue is that my mom doesnt want me to go far from home

CSU domingez hills is still accepting

another issue is that my mom doesnt want me to go far from home

Well, then you may need to go to a local CC for 2 years, and then transfer.

Does your mom want you to stay close to home, because she’s afraid that the family won’t be able to afford the tuition, room and board? That could be an issue.

Since that is your entire SAT, it may be better for you to start at a CC.

Did she tell you to apply to CSU Dominguez Hillls? Is that close enough to commute to? Or, would you have to live on campus? Your scores might fit there.

How much can your parents pay towards your education?

yes and im still 17 and she thinks i will be too young and be hard for me to live on my own.
everyone says i might get lost at a univ. bc im so young

no she didnt tell me but im applying right now as we speak. its only 30 minutes away so i could live at home

i dont know how much they would be able to pay

Get your app submitted.

Have your SAT sent.

Have your school transcript sent.

Ask your parents how much they can pay.

Submit a FAFSA

BTW…many seniors are 17. When will you be 18? I was 17 when I was a freshman at a large university. Both of my boys turned 18 just a few weeks before going to college. You aren’t that young. :)

Good luck!

Good luck! You’re in a similar situation to MANY people (even if it doesn’t feel that way), and if you put in individual effort you’ll be able to do well at CSU Dominguez, or by taking the CC –> uni route. My sister is taking the latter route, and she seems to be pretty satisfied with how things are going to turn out.

If you need help with the FAFSA go to someone in your church if you have one or ask the one of the teachers at school if they know of a parent that could help you. You will have to speak up and ask a neighbor who has a kid in college or whoever you think would know about it. This is the exact time of year it needs to be done and it might mean either outright $ or a low interest loan–so it is important.
GOOD LUCK and let us know where you go.

to CSU domingez hills? or to CC? or both?

do i tell my school to send my transcripts? or do i make a copy and send it? (it might sound like dumb questions but i really dont know what to do)

fafsa i am starting to apply

well i just turned 17 in november
yea i know its not that young but I have never left my parents and i am so attached so it would be hard for both my mom and me
