I don't know what to major in, I need help

I'm going to be a sophomore in college this year and I go to a community college and I'm planning on transferring next year to a 4 year college. Right now I'm having a problem with thinking about what I want to major in, so far I have changed it 6 or 7 times and it's really annoying.

Right now it's accounting, because I like math but other than that the only reason I thought about it is because that's what everyone tells me I would be good at. But I'm thinking differently because I'm not passionate about finance or anything like that. I love movies and thought about being a director/producer or an actor but those jobs aren't guaranteed, and I have no experience behind the camera so I'd rather keep them as something I do on the side.

Whatever I do, I know I want to be the boss, the leader, I like telling people what to do and I like things to go my way. I don't want to major in business because I want to be doing something specific, not just going to any place and leading it.

I'm curious about a lot of things, and I like to figure things out. I like to watch the history, national geographic, and discovery channel to find out about things like the truth about things, why things are the way they are and stuff like that. I like making lists and being organized so things can be structured, but I also like to have fun and I want to travel.

I don't like English class, writing, I only like some science like geology and marine ecosystems, only some history is interesting to me.

Can anyone help with what major might be best suited for me, or how I can find a major? I'm still going to do a lot of research. I know you're major doesn't have to be what you want your job to be, but I don't even know what job I want when I'm older

Well, unfortunately for you companies don’t hire recent college graduates to be the boss or their leader, so you need to adjust your attitude.

Everyone starts somewhere, and it won’t be at the top.

If you are good at math I’d suggest majoring in Statistics, because thats really the practical application for math in business environments. It’s also very diverse. You could work in any business field, politics, government and non-profits.

If you are looking for a greater challenge - go join the military. If you really think you are a leader that is where you will truly test yourself and find out. Judging from your post I think you would also benefit from the humbling it would give you.

P.S. Usually people who “like telling people what to do” and “like things to go their way”, don’t make good leaders.

Good leaders need to be flexible, especially when things aren’t going their way. They also need to be good communicators, which usually isn’t the case with people who just enjoy bossing people around and telling them what to do.

Remember, being a boss and being a leader are two separate things.

Try talking to someone at school…someone in a career services resource center, if your school has one. Otherwise, good luck, cause it sounds like you’re going for a way-too-specific career, and guess what, most of us will not be in our “dream job” immediately after graduation.
