I want to go into advertising. I had originally planned on majoring in communications at UCSB, but then I started thinking that a marketing degree would be more useful. But UCSB doesn't seem to have a marketing degree? And the Business/Econ major seems really math based to me; I'm good at math but would really like to avoid taking calculus classes and what not. So what should I major in? (and minor in)

you dont have to declare your major for two years. while i would not advise waiting that long, you can definitely spend a couple of quarters taking different classes to see what your true interest is.

Since you mentioned that you’re interested in advertising, I figured I’d post this link:
[AAF UCSB - A Student Run Advertising Agency](http://www.aafucsb.info/)

You might have come across it before, but it’s funny for me to read because I didn’t know students designed some of these logos and things that I’ve seen all over campus and IV.

It sounds like it would make sense for you to major in communications… or maybe you can study something else and do the professional writing minor ([UCSB Writing Program - Information](http://www.writing.ucsb.edu/information/info.html)).

And I’m not even sure if the Business Economics major is as math-intensive as you think it is. Then again, I’ve only taken the pre-major courses. In general, I’d be hard-pressed to believe that any major that accepts the math 34A-B series is going to lead to really hard math in upper division courses.

Ok ya I looked more into the communications department website and figured out that advertising is definitely under it. So I’ll be majoring in communications but I still don’t know what to minor in, I have always been interested in psychology but there isn’t a minor for it.

Well, you don’t HAVE to have a minor… but if you really want one, you could do English or something. Minors really aren’t THAT important, if you want to focus on another area than your major you can just do it without any “formal” declaration. You can always just take a lot of psych classes as your electives.

If you are really interested in psychology, you could always double major with communications and psych.

I’ve thought of that too but I’m just scared that double majoring would be too much work… but I guess that’s a whole nother discussion.
