I am a senior in high school and I have no idea where to apply! If it were up to me I would apply out of state but I can't leave home. I am basically the "mom" of the house. I live with my dad and brother and I am the only girl in the house since my mom passed away. I know it would be really difficult for them without me, I clean and cook while they're working. I have applied to Rutgers New Brunswick because it is literally 5 minutes away from where I live, if I don't get accepted or I don't qualify for enough financial aid I will have no other college close to home. If you were in my situation, what would you do? What other colleges should I apply to?

Take a look at the state schools in NJ and see what fits you well. I don’t know any specifics.

Apply everywhere that offers your desired major that is near enough to you. And go to the one that accepts and is closest to you.

Rutgers is a wonderful school. If you want a warmer climate, take a look at Arizona State - Go Devils!

“I know it would be really difficult for them without me, I clean and cook while they’re working.”

Are you sure about that? Draw up a possible plan for how life for all could play out over the course of a school year at college (home in summers). What are their hopes and dreams for you? What major and career are you thinking about. You don’t have to rush into college, either. Perhaps you apply for fall 2015.

Is there a guidance counselor at your school whom you could talk to about your college plans? a favorite teacher? how about a priest or minister?

Can you talk to your dad about how you feel and about your college plans? Is there an aunt if your dad is too busy working?

I’d suggest that you start by feeling out one or two of these people and see how they respond and go from there.
