I'm a Junior in HS, almost Senior (just 4 days!!).. and well, I'm avidly researching colleges and have found two or three I really like and am applicable for. But.. see.. this is a strange question, but I have severe hearing loss (hard of hearing). My mom, ever since I can remember, has woken me up herself (not by voice or alarm). And with my going to college (and living there), I'm concerned about waking up on time and getting to classes ... like.. alarms don't work for me. With my hearing aids out during sleep, I hear pretty much silence.. so any ideas? This is a quirky concern, but a severe one! So.. any ideas or suggestions.. thank-you..

My mom has a cochlear implant and she has an alarm clock that flashes light and you can also get them that vibrate the bed. Have you tried either of those?

I don’t have your problem but my neighbor does and she has this vibrating thing that you put in your pillow. I’ve also heard of vibrating watches that you wear in the night.

Never used those before, but thank-you, guys! I’ll check into it. (:

A Sonic Boom alarm clock will shake your bed.

If you get enough rest, do you wake up naturally in the morning without any alarm?
You could also skip signing up for early morning classes.

Thank you for the suggestion, glassesarechic!

And, siliconvalleymom, I tend to go to sleep very late now (after midnight), and to wake up for school (7 AM), my mother wakes me up. But I assume I naturally awake after about 8 hours… but I would never bet on it, haha.

And thanks for the suggestions. I may discuss it with the school. Or try some of these alarms over the summer.

Thanks all :)

I also have significant hearing loss, too. I use a wrist watch with a vibration alarm. I find that it works best if I rotate it so the watch is against the inside of my wrist. You can find them on Amazon (search: watch vibration alarm)

Don’t bother with one of the super loud (sonic) alarm clocks. Depending on your level of hearing loss you may not hear it & it’d be super annoying for your roommate.

^ That was definitely one of my biggest concerns - not annoying or putting the roommate through any hellcaious mornings! I too believe the vibrating watch could be best, so thank you. :]

I haven’t tried one myself, but I was looking at a dorm advice thread in the Parent’s Forum and apparently the sonic alarm clocks can be set to silent so they only shake the bed. No problem annoying your roommate there.
