Ok so here's my story...I used to live in D.C in my ninth grade year with my grandparents and then I moved to maryland with my mom. Even though I live in maryland with my mom I still use my grandparents D.C address and I never transferred so I still go to a D.C school. I am a senior so I should be filling out the fafsa in Jan but I don't know if I should use my grandparents info or my mom's info! I'm afraid to talk to my counselor because I don't want to get in trouble for living in maryland. I know that if I use my grandparents info I won't get as much aid if I used my mom's info. I have until January to figure this out please help

additional facts
My mom and I live in an apartment with no car
My grandparents owns three cars and two houses (both in D.C)
My grandparents doesn't claim me on their D.C tax form but my mom claims me on her Maryland tax form
My mom is unemployed and married

For FAFSA purposes, you use a PARENT, not grandparents. The custodial parent is defined as the parent with whom you spent the most time during the calendar year. Since you don’t even mention your father, I would assume your mother is your custodial parent. Your stepfather’s information is needed too if your mother is married. Your grandparents do not come into the picture at all.

Thank you! so even though my mother did her taxes in Maryland and I go to a D.C school I should still be fine?

Cpt is correct about the fafsa.

But you do have a residency issue. you are graduating from HS in DC, but you are Maryland resident. Im not sure what will happen if you apply to a Maryland public university…will they question your instate status given that you didn’t graduate from a Maryland public high school? Honestly, I don’t know.

You use your mom and stepdad’s income…never the grandparents…on FAFSA.
