OP- as earlier posters have mentioned, you have some great options. Please try to ignore “prestige.” As a parent of a college freshman, I’ve seen many kids choose colleges based on prestige and they are struggling to get through their first year, some with significant anxiety. This is one disadvantage of attending a school that’s a significant reach.
My daughter is at a less selective school even though she was accepted into more prestigious universities. After attending accepted students days at several schools it became very clear to her where she thought she would fit in and have the college experience that she was hoping for. When she ranked her priorities prestige became insignificant.
Since you’ve already visited Buffalo hopefully you can attend some other accepted students days…ask questions of as many students as you can and it’s ok to ask how much they study/party, what other extracurriculars they’re involved in, how difficult they think classes are, etc.
There is a lot of learning to be had outside of the classroom whether it be working on a project with a professor or getting involved in clubs. All of those things will help you stand out and succeed after college. Remember it’s not the name on the diploma but what you do with it while you’re there. So try not to get hung up on prestige or preconceived notions about where you should be attending. I know it’s tough in this culture but in the end it will help you find the best fit.
Hi, I am still interested in UB but I don’t like how far away that is from home, so SB is a close second. And if I were to get into BU, that would be my first choice.
Why don’t you do some research on the schools you have? If you don’t know the basics…like the fact that Temple is in Philadelphia… then it seems you really don’t know what you have. Why not spend a day or two figuring out exactly what you have?
I just checked your posts— you mention CUNY in one thread. So you’re from the NYC area. Great. We’re looking to get 4-8 inches of snow tonight and may not have school tomorrow. So spend today looking at your options. If you’re still really unhappy with what you have, you may have tomorrow to find and apply to one or two schools that are still accepting applicants
But I’ll get back to my point: it’s Sunday. You have all day today-- and the odds of having tomorrow off are looking pretty decent. So spend some time figuring out exactly what you have in the way of acceptances. If you’re still unhappy, then spend what is looking more and more like a snow day tomorrow finding the right schools and sending out apps.
You got into Temple, which is in a city. You didn’t get into UConn Storrs. You want to be in a city, first and foremost, correct? You need to seriously consider Temple. If this minimal information from you is correct, (and I am making assumptions), it is extremely unlikely you will get into BU and probably not even Syracuse. There are really not that many cities with an urban campus that your stats will qualify you for. If you want to be at a CUNY, which is what all your other responses seem to indicate, check and see if some CUNY’s are still accepting applications for rolling admissions.
Worrying about prestige is totally pointless and I think you’re being very unrealistic. I looked at some of your other replies. You want to transfer and you’re still in high school. That’s really putting the cart before the horse. If your stats were not able to get you into UCONN, getting into more prestigious schools is perhaps an unrealistic idea. Consider giving us your stats so we can make suggestions for you.
Yes, you might need to consider reapplying again next year. Gap years are very common now, and it will give you the chance to do something to improve your application.
I did get into UConn, just not the main campus. T_T what don’t you understand about the me saying over and over again I’m not interested in prestige anymore? I’m even considering CUNYs. Also my stats are at least average for UConn. And I think a major reason I didn’t get into the main campus is because in my common app I wrote that I “transferred from an all girls Catholic school to a diverse active school in the city and I prefer it.” And you see, UConn is rural and they’ve probably seen that I am not very interested in schools like that. And I am being realistic, I had many safeties on my list and I haven’t been rejected by any school yet. Every student has reaches and BU happens to be mine. And frankly I am confident I would get into Syracuse. Because my stats are at least their average, my mom went there, and I have great ECs and a great essay. What do you mean there aren’t that many colleges with an urban atmosphere that I can qualify for? They are called CUNYs and I’m confident I qualify for most of them. Have you heard about my stats? We aren’t talking about a B- student 1030 SAT, we are talking about an A student with a 1250 SAT and that qualifies me for many colleges, stop trashing my stats, have some respect.
And by the way, this entire thread about temple has left a huge bad taste in my mouth whenever I think about it. Temple gave me a small scholarship and it’s rated lower than Umass which gave me a huge scholarship. I don’t want to go there and I am not a fan of their diversity. I’ve done a lot of research and I don’t like what they’re saying. I am still considering UB which by the way is rated higher and cheaper so I don’t understand why you guys are still trying to get me to go to temple. Any interest I had in it is gone now.
I’d pick SUNYs over CUNYs because CUNYs are 99% commuter (unless the SUNYs you got into aren’t affordable).
When students discuss urban colleges on this website they mean Northeastern, Macalester, G’Town, URichmond, UMN TC, UWashSeattle (which all require much higher stats). But you wisely didn’t apply to them.
However, now that you know more precisely what you like, you could add a few more that match what you like (CUNYs or others).
Have you visited Temple yet? I think you’d really like it. It’s a bit like SUNY Buffalo but in a much nicer city with lots of students and better weather.
