I dont play any sports or music. err!?!

does that affect my chances?

I’m already in grade 10 and all of the sports teams have been organised so its impossible to join now… do you think its appropriate to join one or two sports teams for the sake of admission and being well-rounded?
It seems as if all harvard admits played at least one sport or a musical instrument. I ask the gayest Q’s these days dont I? I apologise for being paranoid.

if you aren't interested in anything harvard won't be interested in you. You don't need to do sports or play music specifically but you need to do something besides school sports and music is just the easiest option for most

ah. yes certainly I am interested in some aspects other than music + sports.

thanx for the reply^^;;

I am interested in just sitting on my butt for hours and hours and playing Unreal Tournament 2004....too bad Harvard won't see that as an EC....but it is!!!

You don't HAVE to play a sport or instrument, winning a Nobel Prize makes up for that. But all kidding aside, if you don't play a instrument or sport, its ok. As long as you do other ECs, like debate, MUN, OM, etc.

actually, every year H rejects thousands of kids who play music. Their orchestra only needs so many oboes, flutes, violinists, cellos, etc. Moreover, if music is really gonna add big value to your resume, you need to be a top-ranked in that instrument, not just #1 chair in your HS. Otherwise, music just becomes no better than any other club participation.

bluebayou..
how good would one have to be?

its not the activity that matters, its the effort

unless your going to get a scholarship or play for the school, your aptitude is irrelvent..for the most part they just want to see that your try things, stick with them and have a busy schedule

I play the violin, woot! Ok, just thought I'd throw that in there.

I'm athletically challenged. It's funny because both my parents did every single sport possible in high school and were the stars on their teams and I can barely run a mile in gym class without huffing and weezing before I even get to half a mile... grr.

my problem now is that all my EC's are related to academics; MUN, student government, NHS, mu alpha theta, tech club, speech + debate and so on. I already hold a fair amount of leadership positions but they all seem too academic. they sound random but I'm heavy into maths.

Yeah, man, EC's are the easiest part of your college app. You don't have to do debate conferences, soccer championships, varsity baseball, varsity football, win American idol, AND hold down a part time job. Just get off your butt and do something productive with yourself. SOMETHING. Not hard to do at all. When you complete your apps, just make sure that it shows through that you were reasonably dedicated to something. Easy as pie. Some ideas for you:

-The aforementioned ones are all valid
-Join a school or church choir
-Start your own club at school
-Do volunteer work at an old folk's home (but only if you're sincere about it; don't just do it because colleges like to see it, That's just slimy and insincere)
-Pump gas (aka. get a part time job)

You definetely need to find SOMETHING to do over the summer. That's an absolute must. Anyways, I hope I helped you.

I'm going to build a school in a rural area in Nicaragua where children can't get a proper education in the summer!
