ECs? what else do you do?

orchestra 3 hours/week
piano lessons + practice 10 hrs/wk
new on robotics team 6hrs/wk
community service 2hr/wk

not so very special…

hmmm… focus on your strengths, probably music and show your interest in that. a lot of people have more ECs and stand outin sports but you probably stand out as a musician, so make the most of that.

GPA doesn’t mean much by itself. It all depends on your school’s difficulty and policy. Some schools give a whole extra point for APs, others give half a point. Some even do ridiculous things like giving weight to those frosh/soph “honors” classes (you took Algebra Honors! Wow, here’s a whole point since that must have been SO hard). Compared to kids at your school, where do you fall? They sent anyone to MIT before? If so, how’d they do?

no, you dont stand a chance. sorry. Everyone cannot argue that. Look, there are people that work like hell their four years of high school. They go above and beyond the high school curriculum. They do things high schoolers would not normally do. You dont have anything thatstands out or anything even for something a bit lower than MIT.

^^^^^^^
This is why chance threads are a complete waste of time. Don’t listen to that jackass. First thing you should do is stop using CC to chance yourself and go see your school counselor. They can give you WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY more information than anybody here. Obviously, especially that ******bag but even those that mean well. When you go to him, be sure to ask one things

Has anyone from your school gone to MIT and what are their stats?

Then compare yourself and talk with him (or her) what your chances are. Like I said, GPA doesn’t mean anything. My school is crazy hard and past MIT acceptances have been from 3.89-4.1 (all weighted at the end of senior year). So don’t freak out yet.

But if you want some more advice, you can post that information here. Also

lol Confused cant accept the truth haha. There is no point in yelling. It’s the truth. Go ahead, swear, yell, do anything. I don’t care.

Who are you to say who’s rejected, considering you’re neither an admissions officer, MIT student, or anybody remotely knowledgeable about the admissions process here?

Understandably we would be led to assume that the OP has no chance whatsoever but our interpretation of people’s chances here is just a wild guess considering that:

a) people making these threads never completely include ALL aspects of their application
b) people making these judgments (such as yourself) are never entirely knowledgeable in the admissions process at any top university
and c) there is always room for improvement of any sort, which people tend to overlook

This is why chances threads are useless and just flame bait. The only real helpful advice that one could give is either assurance or encouragement to work on something, not, “you’re not going to get in and I WILL” (considering that your profile’s ‘location’ is " Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania —> MIT 2017" I assume you really want to or expect to get in). Even if the person doesn’t get in, hopefully further improvement will get them into a college they really like. It’s just downright presumptuous and tactless to tell someone they don’t have a chance.

Also, get out of the “What are My Chances?” forum. That’s just a feeding ground for ■■■■■■, and at best a place where unknowledgable people make rude judgments to nervous college hopefuls. I mean, suppose you have a Korean applicant, and you tell him that being Asian is going to hurt his chances at top schools. What do you expect him to do, turn Hispanic? How is that supposed to help him at all? All you’re going to do is instill or reinforce a negative and possibly untrue assumption.

There are only a handful of helpful people there, and the best thing to do here is actually visit the individual forums of the colleges you are hoping to attend.

I get rude posts all the time kemcab. Also it is true that people work straight for 4 years and get do lots of things.

So basically, someone hurt your feelings a while ago and you’ve decided to swear vengeance on anyone else applying to MIT. Right, i’m sure that’s an extremely worthwhile use of your time. Now that you’ve done your very useful work here, why don’t you move on.

belleisbelle, any new info?

Your stats are similar to mine except your weighted is higher than mine, your SAT and SATII are higher than mine. I’m still applying. I have hope, but I don’t expect acceptance

Chances are low, but not nonexistent. If you really want to get in, you better have some pretty earth-shattering essays.

belleisbelle, Confused92 gives excellent advice:

It is worthwhile to investigate MIT, even knowing that the chances for everyone are very low, because you may learn what you are really looking for in a college. For example, you have not listed any major(s) you are interested in.

Then you can do what is needed, and that is to build a list of schools similar to whatever your dream school is (if thats MIT) with similar programs but which have wider acceptance ranges. Off the top of my head, I can suggest Georgia Tech, RPI, Rose Hulman, and Case Western as possibilities. (These schools have excellent programs and can take you anywhere if you do well there.)

Ask if your HS has the Naviance data on line of application results of previous classes. For example, here is a HS in suburban Boston that you can view:

https://connection.naviance.com/fc/signin.php?hsid=bedford

“Enter as Guest”, click on “scattergrams”. Its shows acceptances to various colleges from that HS on a graph of GPA vs SAT. It is better if you can use your own HS’s data. Then you can build a list of schools understanding the level of “grades/scores match” for a number of colleges.

And if MIT is your dream school, then apply there.

Listen to what the man says. Naviance is the best thing since sliced bread.

“Last edited by molliebatmit; Today at 10:51 AM. Reason: Edited in accordance with TOS.” So is this mollie or SA-07? Either way, I know that people are rude on the internet. I’ve hung around imageboards way too long.

I have a lower GPA, and higher test scores, and I still think I have a shot. Why? Because I can explain my failures, can show that I’ve improved from them, and can bring other things to the table.

Perhaps you should check out the EA/RD decision thread and compare yourself to those people instead of asking for chances.

Also, I’m pretty sure I saw an INTERNATIONAL student with a 1990 or so in that thread who got into MIT.

So don’t give up and apply! This way, you’ll at least have a chance to get in, rather than not applying!

Well, if you don’t mind spending ~$70 in the MIT App and you really, really want to get in you should apply anyway, but you have to be prepared for great dissapointment. That way it doesn’t hurt as much if you don’t get in and it makes it so much better if you do.
