I Don't Think I'm Getting In...

Well I've applied to Rice interim decision (School of Social Sciences-Hopefully Political Science). I'm really worried about my chances considering the many applicants that I've read about on this site.

Rank: 2/280
UW GPA: 4.0
W GPA: 6.4/7.0

My school offers 10 AP classes, and I've taken them all. I've also taken four community college courses (4.0 GPA). I've definitely taken the toughest workload my school offers.

Now, here's where the problem begins...my SAT score:

CR: 690
M: 610
W: 670 (10 on essay)

SAT II:

US History: 710
World History: 610 (I took in 10th grade :/)

My ECs are pretty good (500 or so community service hours) and I've been involved with Key Club since my freshmen year.

I've already been accepted to UT-Austin (McCombs Business School), so I have another option. But I'd really like to get into Rice. :)

Thanks guys :D.

BTW, I am a minority, but not a URM :/.

To clarify, I took AP World History in tenth grade. However, I took the SAT II for it in December 2005.

What were your AP scores? Those are important to know whether or not your school is competitive.

4's on Euro His,Us His, World His, and Human Geography and probably Enviro Science. 3's on Eng Lang probably Eng Lit.

I didn't take the Biology or Chemistry exam and I don't intend to take the AP exam for Calculus AB.

I didn't send my AP scores to Rice and got accepted ED, so I don't think it's necessary. I also had a 620 on one SAT II, although my other scores were in the 700s. You have taken a more difficult courseload than I did however. Rice loves salutorians (sp?)... just look on their website to see how much higher their acceptance rate is compared to the average applicant. I think you have a pretty good chance 50/50, I'd say. Good luck!

bump bump bump

Also, does anyone know if Rice will give credit for the CC classes I took?

You're right Jeebus, you're probably not getting into Rice. Median Rice SAT M+V is 1435. 25th percentile is 1330. Your 1300, even with your excellent GPA and class rank, just doesn't make it. Rice gets tons of applicants with GPAs and class ranks equal to yours and SATs at or above 1435. Don't get down on yourself, though. Most of the kids who apply to Rice, even the ones with the high SATs, don't get in. Rice acceptance rate is, as I recall, something like 15%. Also, UT-Austin is a very good school. You'll do just fine there.

to be honest i don't believe Rice is that hard to get into from what i've read and through my observations you won't have a problem getting in there but have u thought of Wake Forest esp. for Maya Angelou fans cuz Maya is a professor there

Bleh, that sucks. Sometimes I think that doing so well over the last four years was a waste of time simply because of one three or four hour test.

Anyone else? :D

I'd like a little more input please...

Jeebus, my nextdoor neighbor got into Rice RD with similar SAT scores, a slightly lower GPA, and not-so-exciting ECs (on the tennis team, NHS. about it.)

You definitely have a chance!

its possible

Your ECs are not strong at all.

Rice: Slight Reach

Rice Average SATI M+V: 1430-1440.
Your SATI M+V: 1300.

Your GPA is average.

Your ECs are definitely mediocre at best at a top private school like Rice.

You have a shot, but it is still a reach, because your SAT's are below average, your grades are great, but your EC's are not as impressive as your grades. If your recs/essays were stellar you have a shot.

do u mean that you are an asian but not a "urm"?
heh
