I don't understand why I did not get accepted

Is there any chance they considered you a transfer (since you already graduated - am I reading that right?). I would definitely call.

I graduated last year but I took a gap year. I’ve been traveling around the States, never attended a college and applied as a freshman.

^^phew good.

ConcertoinD, In STEM, especially engineering, I know GT is as competitive as the IVY League schools. But since the credentials seem so strong, I’d still have the GC look over the application.

Bubbleberry, don’t be disappointed at yourself! Your credentials are excellent. They could not really be much better. Sometimes no matter how good you are, things don’t work out exactly like you’d like but it certainly isn’t “our fault”. So, no reason to be disappointed at yourself (although being disappointed at the outcome is understandable).

I applied to GT for CS (normal decision). Can anyone tell my chances of getting in seeing my stats:
SAT=2300 (800/750/750) (M/CR/W)
GPA= N/A (But I have 11 A* in O-Levels and 5 A* in A-Levels)
Subject test= 2400 (Phy/Chem/Maths)
Class rank= N/A

Extra-curricular:

  • Doing research on artificial intelligence and robotics with a senior student body of one of the universitites in my home town. So far developed a module of a self driving car.
  • Internship at a cancer hospital. I work in their in IT department, have developed their website and help maintain it (I know java, and C/C++ partially…still learning)
    Apart from this little bit of sports and thats all…

Soo far I have been rejected by Stanford, deferred by Princeton, yet to hear from UC-Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon. GT is my last hope. Cuz I am afraid I wont be accepted at Berkeley or CMU either :confused:

I’m sorry you did not get in. That, in no means, is a reflection of your outstanding qualifications. Seriously. Please do not be disappointed in yourself. I think being in state may have been a hindrance. I believe that most state universities would take an out of state application over an in state because of money. I’ve know from previous years several kids that were accepted to some ivies that were denied to Florida.

I do agree that you should call and see what answer they give. However, remember that you might just get a “we had more qualified applicants than we had seats for” answer.

no matter what, you should be very proud of your accomplishments.

@billal11How can you have already heard from Stanford and Princeton? You are only allowed to apply to one of them during the early round.

Did you have any safety schools on your list?

@Bilal11: don’t hijack someone else’s thread. Create your own. it’s considered very rude and could get you “jailed” for bad manners.

@bubbleberry : have the guidance counselor review your application with a finetooth comb. If there’s a problem with it that you don’t know about, you need to know ASAP (could be a poorly written recommendation, an essay you think is great but isn’t…)
Where else have you applied?
Since you’re travelling around the country, I assume you’re not looking for FA. If so, apply to Penn State and UMinnesota - very strong engineering, and you’d be sure to get in as long as all your material is in by Jan 30.

@MYOS1634
I made an appointment with my guidance counselor tomorrow.
I applied to Duke, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt and Cornell for RD. I thought I was ok for these schools but after getting rejected by GT I’m not sure anymore

All of those schools reject thousands of kids with your stats! You applied to a safety, right?

@HRSMom I got into Emory last year and made a deposit. If I don’t get into any of those schools, I have a spot secured at Emory :slight_smile:

Great! Was worried for a minute!

@bubbleberry I think the main reason you were rejected is because you deposited at Emory and you also deferred your enrollment. It is my understanding that deferral of your enrollment required the approval of the Dean of Admissions and that in your paperwork you had to indicate your plans for your gap year and the commitment that you will attend Emory in the Fall of 2016 Georgia Tech and Emory have a close relationship and it would not be in Georgia Tech’s interests to accept you when you have already deposited at Emory. In fact Emory could rescind your admission if they find out you are applying to other colleges especially since you filled out the gap year paperwork. Colleges can check enrollment data for students and I am sure yours would show that you deposited on Emory and that you are taking a gap year. You situation is not similar to where a student wants to transfer because you have not started classes. Plus if you read the requirements for a gap year at Emory, they are pretty strict.

I’m curious why someone would be interested in both Emory and Georgia Tech. They are very different.

@itsv I’ve never thought of that
Do you really think that would affect their admissions process?

What is your leadership?

@itsv I looked into their deferral policy and as long as I’m not “enrolled” in any institution, I think I would be fine

@bubbleberry You have to look at it from Georgia Tech’s perspective. Colleges have databases with all kinds of students’ information. One factor that plays in a college’s decision-making is “yield”, how many students will say yes and enroll in the college. Under the “rankings” by U.S News-if too many students do not enroll, a college’s ranking goes down. I have been told that when a student deposits at a college, that information goes into a database. Some students try to deposit at more than one college and colleges have been able to “catch” those kinds of students since doing so affects a college’s yield. I bet somewhere, it is noted that you have deposited at Emory so I am not surprise GT turned you down. Especially when both colleges are located in the same city, the admissions office does not want affect their relationship. Imagine GT accepts you, you then tell Emory “thanks for granting my gap year and holding that spot open for me for the past year, but I have now decided to attend GT across town”, your reneging on your enrollment at Emory affects their yield. Colleges do not like when students do those sorts of things.

The one positive thing in your situation is that Emory is a great college and you will still be in the same city as your friends and boyfriend. You must have been excited about it to put a deposit down so get excited about it again.

@bubbleberry My apologies. I realize it was your thread and I shouldn’t have started discussing my situation here. I was too worried to realize that before

@desiel I applied for EA at Stanford. I applied Princeton for regular decision sometime back. Actually the thing is I had to take a gap year due to personal problems (So deference from Princeton was before taking that gap year).
