CSULB had over 40,000 applicants for the freshman class this year. This was a record high. It was higher than SDSU. It is my understanding that is you lived outside of the service area you had to have well over 3,600 eligibility index on average.

My daughter’s GPA is similar to yours and she scored a 21 on the ACT. She did not get accepted and she did not apply for nursing. Nursing is the most impacted major of all, so I am sure the acceptance level was much higher.

1) the 17 ACT enrollee would typically be an athlete or URM
2) reducing freshman admissions this year by 20%
3) CSU’s give preference to students for whom THAT CSU is the closest to their home. To be admitted from outside their feeder area requires higher than average stats. You are in an “outside area” applicant pool.

Add to that – CSULB is the third hardest CSU to get into, after San Luis Obispo and San Diego. SD and LB are the two CSUs in particular that are into big-time sports and have lots of dorms. so they’re very popular. That’s why LB and SD at times are harder to get into than UCR and UCM… the traditional big time college feeling.

The CSU’s just have an algorithm of your gpa and your test scores. If your combined number is over a set number - you’re in. Sorry, but it’s probably your ACT that killed your app. I don’t know if they have an appeal system, but you might want to look into it?
