I don't want to go to any of the schools I applied to

As the title states, I don't want to go to any of the schools I applied to. The only school that I've seen that I really want to go to is Boston University, but it's way too expensive. Now, I'm really stuck, because it's really late and most schools aren't accepting applications anymore. Taking a year off is not an option for me. What should I do?

To where have you been accepted and why did you originally apply there?

Go to community college for a year and then transfer or go to one of the schools you applied to and see if it grows on you. If not you can always transfer from there too

Why isn’t it an option to take a year off?

Why do you think BU would be too expensive? Do you not qualify for any aid?

What budget are you working with? If you can indicate a figure, perhaps someone can advise you.

Why can’t you take a year off of school and work? One of those schools might look better to you then, or you can look into something else during that time?

You can look at this application season as a trial run for you and use what you have learned to do it again next year. Make the most of this run, by checking out what you can get in finacial aid from the colleges to which you have applied. See what you need to do to afford college and look for an affordable school that will take you and that will suiit your needs.

You can also look around at some local schools, some smaller schools, some Catholic schools. There are colleges out there still taking applications. Look at Momfromtexas in the archives and read her threads on finding full ride scholarships.

A year off isn’t an option because my parents won’t allow it. I’ve talked to them about the benefits before and they’re just not having it. I can’t give an exact figure of my budget, but BU is out of my range. I won’t get any aid and it’s too late for scholarships.

The College Board website has a search tool that lets you find all the colleges still accepting applications.
So…how did you pick the schools you applied to? What are you looking for?

What is your budget? Start there. Use the college-matching search engines and look for affordable options. You may find something that works.

If you can present your parents with a viable plan for a gap year, they might be more accepting. “I decided I don’t like my college list.” may not seem like a valid reason to them.

Why did you originally apply to those schools and would you be willing to say what they are so we can help you?

I’m going to study History.

University of Maryland - because of DC connection, but it’s not someplace I can see myself living at for the next four years.
Salve Regina University - offer concentration in European History (I’ve been accepted here and they’re giving me a scholarship), but it’s really small and isolated and I like big schools.
University of Rhode Island - safety school, not really interested

Okay. Well, if you like big schools, there are a lot of public universities still accepting apps. So, I’d look into that, for one thing.

I can’t figure out what you want from any of this, only what you don’t want.

so, good luck to you.

Have you visited these citites/schools? You never really know unless you actually go to the school, see the people at the school and surrounding city and see how people are. I say if you have the means and opportunity, visit some of these schools.

Salve Regina with a scholarship and you do not want to attend? Is this school too close to home for you? (or too small?) It was one of the most beautiful schools on our college tour. Next to The Breakers and overlooking the Cliff Walk in the midst of even more gorgeous real estate with a beautiful walkable campus and bikes for every student. Nice college town on the ocean? Sailing, salt breeze? Students seemed very happy. Help me understand what is not to love. Just too small???

Depending on what your family can afford, you might want to look into Canadian schools, which have a much later application deadline, and are considerably cheaper, even for internationals. McGill, UBC Vancouver, UToronto are all schools that come to mind when I think urban, larger, institutions.

I have visited all of them. And yes, Salve Regina is just too small for me. Thank you for the suggestion of the Canadian schools. I actually just started looking into UToronto and it seems like a good option!

What is your budget? How much will your parents pay?

If you can’t afford BU then you have to put it out of your mind move forward with schools you can afford. In terms of other choices, this list may be helpful. Check deadlines but you may want to look into SUNY Albany, SUNY Buffalo, UScranton.

A lot of larger public universities such as University of Pittsburgh, Purdue and such are still accepting applications.

Yikes - on reply #8 I said the College Board when I meant the Common App website! Sorry…Here is the exact link.
