<p>Hi, I'm currently an undeclared freshman at UC Santa Barbara's College of Letters and Science. My goal is to be a computer science major, but unfortunately the only way to petition for a major change is to complete three computer science courses (16, 24, and 40). These courses, however, are restricted to majors only for the first two registration passes and I am only able to wait-list on the third (final) pass. The problem is, the undergraduate CS director told me that the three classes required to petition are "always very full" and "difficult to register for if you are a non-major."</p>

<p>I've been trying to figure this out for a while and the only solution i can see is to apply to another college as a declared computer science major. The thing is, I'll have to start from square 1 and likely be an undergraduate for at least 5 years.</p>

<p>Has anyone every been in a similar situation? I'd appreciate any advice as I can't find any other major I'm this interested in.</p>

<p>Crash. Or find a friend with an earlier passtime to save you a spot. The guys at that other place though has much better answers to your problems . . .</p>

<p>Just follow the normal procedure. 100 student waitlists are the reality. Most people get into the major regardless. </p>

<p>I don’t understand, though, why you are so insistent about CS that you would leave all you’ve built up at this school to go find another college…sounds like you’re in that existential mode about what you wanna do for the rest of your life…you pick CS because its a safe career route. You really are not sure what you are passionate about but you don’t wanna be undecided. I bet that is what is going on…</p>

<p>How about con current enrollment at SBCC, do they offer equivalent classes?</p>

<p>In retrospect I would have worded the original post a little differently…
but I’m not a closed book and I am taking a chemical engineering seminar as well as statistics and anthropology classes. I’ve taken bio, chem, physics, cs, and several other classes in the past and while they were mostly entry level, my interest in computer science has outlasted the others.</p>
