I am an international student and joined college a month ago. I can understand all that is going on in class(almost all it is a bit difficult because of the accent and stuff) but when I try to do the assignments I go blank and I don’t think the TAs are able to help me properly. I feel like crying all the time and I just wish I could leave everything buy I don’t want to. I just don’t know what to do or how to deal with the situation. Any suggestions?
Aside from the TAs, have you sought out others for academic help?
In addition to academic help, have you talked with a counselor or other adult who could help you with your transition to college life?
It is hard to be away from home and adjusting to a college workload. Most schools have special advisers for international students. You need to be proactive and get the help you need. Find out who your academic adviser is and make an appointment. Speak to a professor you like and ask for help. Usually schools have a writing center or learning center where kids can go for extra help with assignments and find tutors. There is no fee for these services. You need to be proactive and find out what services you are entitled to. Start with your adviser and go from there.
You also need to find a support system. Try to find other international students and ask how they are handling things. It would be nice to find someone from your home country who can help you feel more comfortable. Joint a bunch of clubs and student organizations. Many kids feel isolated when they start college.
Put on your big kid pants and be the awesome person you planned to be when you applied to school in a foreign country. This is a bold life choice and will no doubt make you a better person. You just have to give it time and celebrate every success.
Good lick and keep us posted!!!
