I'll be seeing an advisor in a couple of days but would like to know if I messed up sooner than later.

I came in this year as a transfer. I couldn't decide between Biopsych or regular psych as my major when applying. I was leaning towards biopsych so that's what I applied as even though I wasn't sure. I gave it more thought and after orientation I decided psych would be better for me and took the courses that would meet the psych requirements. I made the assumption (which I shouldn't have) that even though I was a pre-biopsych major that I could switch over to psych if I wanted to since I wouldn't be switching departments or anything.

Basically I'm freaking out right now because I realize how dumb it was to make that assumption since the required biopsych courses are ones that I would have needed to start on last quarter and I don't have time to mess around. So I just wanted to know if anybody could tell me if I'm as screwed as I think I am, or if they'll actually let me change majors?

Switching majors is easy in the College of Letters and Science. You’ll be fine, you just need to go fill out a form to switch majors. I remember in freshman orientation two summers ago the professor speaker told us that when he attended UCSB he changed 7 times without a problem. You are not stuck!

Muserz, Dain is a transfer student. His/her situation is a little bit different that freshman students.

Dain, it’s possible that you’ll still be able to switch majors. You need to tell them that you can’t finish biopsych within two years enrollment at UCSB. And have a rough schedule of psych classes you’ll be taking before you graduate to demonstrate that switching to psych would be make you graduate on time. Your transfer contract normally wouldn’t let you switch majors for no reason. You can also avoid that by double majoring. Double major in the major you came in with and something you wanna major in now, and later drop the major that you came in with.
