The entire MTM album made me sad - because Linkin Park is not what it used to be :(

"I live in Indieland.

Coldplay, Jack's Mannequin, Postal Service, and Death Cab for Cutie would be the obvious choices. "

Because I'm a huge music snob, I'm going to point out that Coldpay and Death Cab aren't indie.... even though I'm cringing as I type this (I hate being snobby about music).

April 8th by Neutral Milk Hotel is incredibly sad.... as is Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) by Arcade Fire.

Check out this cover of the aforementioned Tecumseh Valley by Nanci Griffith

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXOSLlur1Tc

Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle-Emmure

It's hardcore, so skip it if you don't like screaming, but it's depressing, at least for me.

Nine Crimes - Damien Rice
I Remember - Damien Rice
Cold Water - Damien Rice
Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect - The Decemberists
Never is a Promise - Fiona Apple
Honey and the Moon - Joseph Arthur
Cavanaugh Park - Something Corporate
This Is Your Life - Switchfoot

Ashokan Farewell, if you're into that type of music.

Listen to Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nail's Hurt:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO9dbmJ_2zU

I strongly encourage everyone to watch it. Cash died a few days later, and this song is widely seen as his epitaph. It nearly makes me cry, and I'm usually pretty stolid. It's an absolutely beautiful song.

Oh man. Ashokan Farewell made me cry -- played it in orchestra.

Edit: But they (Coldplay + Death Cab) sound definitively indie. =] Nothing called "hate to be a ___" if you end up doing it.

Suprised that no one has recommended this yet; "my my, hey hey" by Neil Young.

Oh Spill Canvas nails it, especially their song "Black Dresses" --> kindof emo though...
Michelle Branch always makes me feel better...
Whatever you do, don't listen to Taylor Swift's "Our Song"...its too happy-cheery

Sorry, Taggart! From now on, I will restrain myself and keep my comments to myself... you'll have to help me end my music snobbery =)

they are not indie. how do you sound definitively "un-supported by record labels"? indie has become such a misused term, seriously. alternative rock is a much 'better' term even if it just implies a generic umbrella.

Speaking of Neil Young how about Helpless?
Jackson Browne-These Days

Hurt-Johnny Cash
Why would you listen to a sad song when youre feeling down?

Lesley Gore's "Sunshine, Lollipops"

:D

Yeah, why listen to depressing tunes when you're feeling down?

Try Phish Ya Mar
Harry Hood

Gotta Jibboo

Bob Marley Don't Worry
Three Little Birds
No Woman No Cry

Paul Simon Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes

Grateful Dead Eyes of the World

that song "A Time for Us" from the 1960s Romeo and Juliet film

"Somewhere only we know" By Keane. IT TEARS ME.

Yay for the Grateful Dead!

Try "Box of Rain" that one's pretty nice too.
