I Failed to get a Finance Internship. Now what?

I'm a JR at Tulane University and I have a 3.7 in my business classes. I applied for 17 different banks in the Fall including everything from the biggest ones to smaller ones and I didn't get a single interview. Both my resume and cover letter templates were all good according to career development people. I went to two different career fairs on campus and talked to the people representing the companies I liked, got their card, etc and I thought I would AT LEAST get an interview. Wrong.

It's not like I was applying for IB. I just wanted a simple finance internship on the research side.

So I'm desperate at this point. In fact, I just applied for Sherwin-Williams Paint and Rent-A-Car internships LOL.

The funny thing is that I actually transfered to Tulane from a non-reputable state school to get better opportunities in finance. In doing so, I pretty much lost a semester, and as a result, I am a first semester junior who can't take an introduction to finance class until the Fall, the 2nd semester of my junior year. Is the fact that I've never taken a finance class hurting me? Should I change my career aspirations to get an internship?

Thanks in advance.

One of the reasons you are having a hard time is that for all intents and purposes, you are still a sophomore. You won’t be able to graduate until December, 2013, which means that companies won’t be able to extend FT offers to you at the end of this summer.

Keep applying to companies… you shouldn’t stop applying until you secure a position of some kind. For this summer, consider opportunities outside of finance, including jobs that aren’t internships. With good application materials and a solid GPA, you should have more luck next cycle, when companies will know that they can extend a FT offer at the end of the summer.
