I failed two classes

So I failed two classes as it already says I was reading around and it says that if i retake the class and do better that UC’s don’t look at the F Also there is a thing called an AR what is an AR? please someone get back to me. Thank you

It is when you get a ‘D’ or ‘F’ in a class you took two years ago and replace it with a satisfactory grade. The grade will still physically appear in your transcript, but the GPA will not correspond to that grade.

Keep in mind, though, if you were to retake these courses you failed and get an A (or even a passing grade) in both, UC’s would look at the higher grade. In this case, there would be no need for academic renewal if you are only concerned with transferring to a UC. For academic renewal, you must go through a petitioning process at your school in order for the grade of interest to not be calculated in your GPA, but the UC’s will recognize that you have retaken the course.

Some schools do not honor academic renewal (USC is one of them), many of which are private schools.

AR stands for Academic Renewal, and it is another way of having courses removed from your GPA. The only think is usually you can only have it done after a certain amount of time has passed since you took the course you want to remove. Anywhere from 6 months to 2 years usually, but it is different for every community college so you should look up your college’s policy.

It depends on how a UC will look at a failing grade when it’s retaken, through AR or otherwise. Each UC and major is different. Berkeley Haas, as an example (which I use as I’m familiar with it) requires that you use the first attempt to satisfy a requirement. Verbatim, they state: “If you repeated or have taken more than one course to fulfill a prerequisite you must use the first attempt to satisfy the requirement.”

So one thing to keep in mind is the UC and major, as well as what type of class it was.

Academic renewal? How should i request this? Do I go to a counselor? If I do in fact do an academic renewal does it erase all my grades including my A’s? or just the F’s?

Also if my school does happen to do the AR how long does the process take? What do i have to do in order to start the petition?

@Barebears Talk to a counselor at your school and ask about the academic renewal process.

Thanks for your guy’s help i really appreciate it.

“Academic renewal? How should i request this? Do I go to a counselor? If I do in fact do an academic renewal does it erase all my grades including my A’s? or just the F’s?”

Google your school’s name and academic renewal. C’mon man … spend a few minutes researching it on your own and then ask some questions if it’s still not clear.

*Often people come on here looking for information beyond what shows up on the school website, like advice from people that have been through it already or any other more in depth analysis. They don’t have to say that explicitly for it to be true.

Still, @Barebears, if you don’t like someone’s advice, reporting it is not the right move unless it is rude or otherwise uncivil. The above doesn’t come close to that level. Clearly there is no violation of the Terms of Service. Either just ignore it and hope for better advice, or respond civilly that what you meant was that you were hoping for people that had been through it, or whatever it is you are looking for beyond the mechanics.

Seriously dude? You reported him? Not cool.

I have been through the process of academic renewal and the answer to pretty much all your questions is it depends on your college’s policy.
