So in my last semester at CC (I was planning to take an extra semester to get to 70 units before transferring out) I got a B in a scholars (TAP) major requirement class so its a double whammy. I feel like this grade isnt justified and I wasn't the only one that felt this way (almost the whole class was complaining about this teacher and her tests not really being fait) My GPA now stands at 3.78 with 61 units done and I feel like my chances of getting into UCLA and UCB are basically at 0. What can I do? :(

…what is your major?

Plenty of my friends got into UC Berkeley and UCLA with a 3.5-3.6. My friend who is a physics major got into UCLA with a 3.2.

Political Science. Did they have anything less than a 4.0 in their Major classes?

With a 3.78, you have a great shot of getting into those schools. It’s more likely than not you will be accepted, assuming you meet all other requirements. Also, keep in mind that UCs use your Summer and Fall grades into their calculation for admissions evaluation, so that might not be your final GPA.

I’m here to relieve some stress!
I wouldn’t worry that much, Cyanide. I was in the same position as you. I received one B in a major class. I also didn’t think it was justified and was so irked last semester, because I had the professor again. He didn’t recognize me, but after one test in that class he started saying stuff like, “Oh what’s your opinion, Objection? You’re a straight A student.” WELL NOT ANYMORE. Ahaha. The situation is funny now but I digress.

I still got into Cal and UCLA. I am also a political science major, so don’t freak out. The only thing that might sadden you is that you don’t qualify for the Regents Scholarship anymore (at least for UCLA).

@La - I’ve just been worried cause I’ve even seen people with 3.9s+ getting denied for both UCB and UCLA. Also, all of my requirements IGETC + TAP + Major reqs etc are done. I’ve gotten A’s in all my other TAP and major classes

@objection - Really? What were your grades/EQs like?

I have my stats posted a few times in this forum, but I don’t feel like digging them up. I had all A’s, except for that one B. Each semester I took around 15-17 units, Presidents Honor List or Dean’s list every time. I don’t think my EC’s were that impressive. For CC, I listed volunteering at an animal shelter and at CSULB’s performing arts center. My high school activities were much better, I had 500+ volunteer hours and listed the ones that I had positions in such as VP for a volunteer club, VP/founder/secretary for Robotics club, committee member for high school’s WASC accreditation, etc. I think I also put poll working.

IGETC, TAP, and major requirements for UCB and UCLA done.

I’ve seen people with lower stats that have gotten into UCLA and Cal in the same major. Those with high stats that get denied tend to have missed a pre-req or two or were lacking something that made them an outlier.

Just keep getting A’s in your summer and fall classes and write a killer personal statement and you’ll make it in.

@karma - I’ve already completed 61 units and I wasn’t really considering going in the fall even though I signed up for 2 electives. Not sure if it makes a difference.

^Classes in the Summer and Fall will be included in your GPA when they evaluate you. So if you get As, your GPA will go up. Obviously if you don’t though, your GPA will go down.

It doesn’t matter how many units you have as of now as long as you haven’t attended a 4-year institution prior to CCC. I’m quite surprised that you haven’t considered that this summer and more importantly this upcoming fall semester would be the most important GPA boosting time periods before you transfer, because those grades would directly be factored into the admissions process. If I were you, I’d start signing up for more classes in the fall to raise your GPA.
