i feel like crying

For that you need to answer some questions.

Did you enjoy what you learnt in the first year?
If yes, did you find the academics challenging?
Were you able to cope with the work involved?
Did you manage to get satisfactory grades and will be able to sustain/ do better this year?
Have you made some interesting friends here?
Do you find the faculty accomplished both in terms of knowledge and teaching?
Is the overall environment to you liking?
What is pushing you to have this discussion, self or peer pressure?
Is the alternative program in college of your choice?
If yes, is it so exciting that it is worth sacrificing one year?
Does it guarantee a better job?
Have you done enough research in terms of comparing the 2 courses?
If yes, do the benefits of one heavily outweigh the other?
What does your family have to say?
What advise is the current school offering?
What makes you so sure that you would not want to change this too?
What if the environment is not what you perceive it to be?
Have you talked to seniors from the place you wish to change to and where you are currently?
How different is their feedback and actual job placement record?
Is that the place you want to be and will not feel odd in terms of your batchmates being a year ahead in your new college?

Why this is important is that your new friends and study group will be your juniors in school. If you were going to study out of the country this factor would not be of much consequence but same city and India, these things can be a factor on psyche , positive or negative, only time will tell.

These are only some of the questions that I can think of at this moment.

Switch only if you failed miserably or the content is not at all what you thought it would be.

Economics is a dry subject, for me, it is not everybody’s cup of tea. It sounds simple, people either do exceptionally well or just about manage. And maybe if you had in school, you already know your coping capabilities with Economics.

My experience, I dropped math after class 10th and did not enjoy Eco in College at all, it was a compulsory elective for my Pol Sc Hons course. My D on the other hand had Math HL at IBDP level and Calc 1 was a program requirement in first year of college as was Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Math she enjoyed and Eco she struggled.

So weigh in carefully and then take a decision.

@anialways i dont have enough time.i know u have thrown a volley of questions at me.the questions u are asking me are not at all relevant for me.il tell u why.
1.i didnt study a single subject of biotech or remotely related to my fiels.coz in indian engg colleges they teach various streams in the first year like mech,it,cs,production etc etc.nd not a single sub of biotech.thats where the confusion stems from.
2.answering next three questions is totally irrelevant
3.i made really good friends but they are in diff majors.one in chemical and other in IT.
4.you know i havent met my other biotech peers yet and we havent sat in one class yet.all branches are shuffled up in 1st year and common faculty teaches so i havent had the opportunity to interact with them.
4.the overall evironment is ok.i have adjusted though
5.i as well as my peers are pushing me to have this discussion
2.

6.theres no alternative program in my college
7.economics woukd guarantee a bettr job i guess
8.my gamily has left me to totally take the call and my current school is not offering me any advise
9.seniors dont tell much and honestly i dint interact wid them
10.placement record is okay.it offers average salaries in india.below average too
11.feeling odd/elder is not at all an issue for me.i dont care.and what does one year make a difdernce in somebodies life.nobody will be even be able to make out that im an year elder to them

what major is ur daughter pursuing???in which college??

Sara

The questions are what would help in your decision making, because as kids we are taught to ask questions, the more the questions the more the Knowledge, and more the knowledge, more the likelihood of answers we are looking for. Without that it is just impulsive and risky way to live and that is not how sound, educated societies develop. If you see the developed world, you will notice they encourage its people to get into debates and discussion, and at the same time respect the right to have an opinion different from yours.

I guess in case if the school is not offering any advise and the seniors don’t have any positive inputs and you have managed admission in a good college, by that I mean, the college is known for a strong Eco program, and if you believe you will do better there and you know what you are getting into, and your family trusts you to make the right call and most important if the volley of questions is not raising any red flags, switch seems like a good option.

My D is at Stern,NYU studying BS in Business Studies and likely to major in Finance and Marketing. They have end of Sophomore year to officially declare their major.

nice to hear about ur daughter.what are u by profession???

i said i didnt have time because u know today was d first day in du for my course.not going on d first day doesnt make any difference but if i have to decide i have to do it today

I am a full time mom, and not a professional if that is what your question is.

And if you are already in your new college, Good for you.

Wishing you the best for this journey and onwards. Blessings.

thnx for ur blessings.did ur daughter go on scholarship?

Nope. NYU does not offer scholarships for International Students.

@anialways whats d fee stucture per semester in dollars??

You can try for NUS and NTU with that percentage!
And besides, Biotech is in its breeding stage in India. It is one hell of a branch, but you gotta find those rare and good jobs in India.

@isaacnewton u know my parents refused me to go to NTU.i had been accepted there.Due to some really lame issues that i just dont understand.I dont like taking advise from them anymore after the blunder they did to my career by not sending me to NTU even though i was really keen on going.

^Are they paying for you? If they aren’t, then you don’t need to feel bound to listen to them, necessarily…

they are paying for me but also have the money to send me to NTU.so its imperative to listen to their weird reasons

Well, they must have their reasons for not sending you abroad, then…
