I got a call from Choate's volleyball coach, David Loeb.
I know it's only because I filled out a special interest form, and he obviously calls everyone that fills one out, but we really connected and chatted for almost 20 minutes.
And once I told him I was a setter, about 5 minutes in, he was really excited.
Am I stupid for feeling like we hit it off in a good way, and that the call went beyond what he typically does?
Also, does he always put the athletes he calls on the mailing list for game summaries and team info like he did me?

I mostly want to know because I want to know if this was sincere or just more marketing from admissions. It felt so sincere and hearfelt and really he made me feel very welcomed into the school already. (Choate's been my second choice for a while now, but it's making it's move forward...)

Maybe a mix of sincerity and good admission’s strategy. For the sake of calibrating your hopes however, I would assume that he was “shining you on” as part of the admission’s process…always assume that the deal is “not” closed until it actually is…never allow your emotions to creep in and make you think otherwise…that sounds horribly jaded, but it’s born of experience…

My experience with Choate is that this is their MO. They are very friendly, very happy about student interest, they have a very nicely run program, but that doesn’t mean you’re in.

I know that I’m not in. There is NOTHING guaranteed to anyone until those acceptance letters come rolling in on March 10th.
I’m still in the deep process of evaluating- is my first choice really my FIRST choice? And also I know that this is obviously good admissions strategy- he was selling me on the school during the entire thing, but not in an obtrusive, obnoxious way. It was friendly and happy and talkative, and I like it, even if it was strategy.

Saer, if you even get into any of the schools you are applying to, you should be happy. All the schools you applying to are probably really good schools, what is there to worry about? (unless you get rejected for everything, that is). And also, it’s not good to feel special. Everyone might feel tempted to think/say they have a good chance of getting in, but the best state of mind (in my opinion) is to think that your chance of getting in is abysmally slim, and do as much as you can to improve that chance.

It is the coaches job to help sell you on the school. That is not to say that you didn’t hit it off with him and that he didn’t really like you. I would keep in touch with him - send him YOUR stats etc. at the end of the season, go to see a Choate game if you can and introduce yourself at the end of it. It can’t hurt. Coaches can give admissions “wish lists” of candidates - no guarantee they will get in, but it helps.

But, don’t let the coach move the school into “first choice” catagory on your list. For a couple of reasons. First and foremost, what if the coach leaves next year? Happens all the time. You get in, are all excited, chose Choate over another school BECAUSE of the coach and then you find out he has left to move on to bigger and better things. Would Choate still be your first choice without him there? Or you get hurt and can’t play.

We had a coach meet with my son for 5 minutes or so and without ever seeing him play, pretty much offered him a starting spot on the team, and then reminded him that the other school on his list had twice as many boys competing for those spots. That school immediately jumped from second to first on his list even though it wasn’t the best match for him.

I guess my rambelings is to say, take it into consideration - but only a little - when doing yourown personal list of schools and your preferences.

I made a comment right when I saw this thread but deleted it. I do that all the time but I was going to say pretty much the same what Parlabane had stated in addition to strongly suggesting to read D’yer Maker’s “If you’re new to CC, please read this before posting”. Nothing wrong about feel special, in M & D’s eyes you sure are. Anyway, Choate is a great school and many moons ago was a BS where many wanted to go and still do. It is a terrific school with fantastic attributes. There is still plenty of time to decide. Think positive, hope for the best and prepare for the worse. Good luck!

I think you are special Saer I hope you get in to Choate and Exeter and everywhere else you apply. You certainly can’t go wrong with Choate. Have you visited the campus yet?
