I feel very guilty to get in UCS by lying!!!!!

To force you into the (more expensive) graduate program.

i dont know if i really have any business in this thread…but, i just wanted to say

bigsmallfish,
i know you probably do feel guilty and im not exactly sure what youre motivation was to start this thread, knowing that people would probably bash you. im not saying its bad that you started this thread and i dont doubt that youre a good person, but this does say a little something about your character.

nonetheless goodluck with whatever you decide to do :)

but come on people, there is no use in “wanting his name”…thats kind of lame

College,

Family, friends, and psychiatrists are all real world people whom the OP would feel shame in front of. This forum is completely anonymous.

I don’t know about you, but in my time I have met a hell of a lot of stupid people with a full range of backgrounds, motivations, and beliefs. I think you are letting your own personal viewpoint get in the way. Just because you exercise common sense and integrity, it doesn’t mean the OP does at all (and it doesn’t make this a ■■■■■ thread).

I’ve seen a lot dumber things than what the OP is doing. In fact, last year a guy on here (name was “trumpet” something or other) openly boasted that he lied on his app. I actually got flamed for calling him a dumbass and a discussion broke out between those who say it is okay to lie/cheat/steal their way to the top and those who actually have integrity.

That guy ended up going to UCSD so I let it go. Had he gone to Cal though, it might have somehow come up in a conversation with the two alumni I know who work admissions.

CollegeHopeful, you assume that people are rational, but many are not. In fact I doubt all your decisions are rational, that you don’t take stupid risks from time to time out of pressure from emotional burdens. We all do it, it makes sense.

“In a closed society where everybody’s guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity.”

I’m not gonna say you were right or wrong…

However, you did lie, and that is an undeniable fact. But I have lied about very critical things too. Things that harm nobody of course. But I understand where you are coming from. Sometimes, you just want something so badly, that you feel outraged on how unfair it is that you were simply not born into that “privileged position”, for example, a California resident.

But I’m sure, that in if 30 years you earn a nobel prize or make a huge contribution to humanity, little could they care about a slight misdemeanor.

Batllo - Right on the money!

So again, WHY have you not applied as a grad student?

And quit shaming Koreans you c*nt! Kim Jong Il is making us look shady enough as it is… godDAMMIT.

OP You are awesome. Welcome to Cal. I honestly hope the admissions people never find out.

well there’s no denying that you did lie, but I am more mad about people who generalize all koreans as “good at lying” or liers. That’s like saying blondes are stupid, blacks are criminals, etc. Get some education. Oh and the OP Korean, I hope you had a real good reason why you lied.

I don’t think that’s how generalizations work. It’s usually “a lot of blondes are stupid” or “a lot of blacks are criminals”, which are practically factual statements. I don’t know about Koreans being liars though, I’ve never heard/seen that before.

those are true statements…? all the blondes and blacks I know do not fit those stereotypes. Can you tell me where I can find the “factual” information on blondes being stupid? I think i’ve seen higher rates of crimes for blacks (due to their lower average household income, education etc), but saying that ALOT of blacks are criminals seems like any other stereotype that some ignoramus would say.

Generalizations are general, a lot is a general quantity, there is no statistical proof for “a lot”. I know plenty of blondes that are dumb as ****, plenty enough to qualify as a lot. Of course there’s also the higher crime rate amongst blacks, which also qualifies as “a lot”.

There is no percentage necessarily associated with a lot, it’s meant to be vague. Does this mean all blacks are criminals and all blondes are dumb? No, it means a lot of them are.

Generalizations aren’t simply taken for granted, they’re applied towards personal experience and verified. For example if you tell me you think a lot of Mexicans are dirty, I’d think back to personal experience with Mexicans to verify whether your statement holds any validity to me. If I don’t think so, I’d simply disagree with your generalization.

If you claim that a lot of blondes are dumb, and I’ve seen a lot of dumb blondes, I am likely to agree with your generalization since I can personally verify it. At least that’s how I deal with generalizations.

Why are they facts? Once again, because they’re typically so vague and generalized that they can’t be proven wrong. There is no percentage association with a generalization.

then anything can be said about any group of people, like “a lot of blondes are smart” or “a lot of blondes are criminals.” Then all groups of people would have the same set of generalizations, which wouldn’t be meaningful at all.

A lot of men have pėnises.

They could, but they don’t due to the subjective verification I mentioned earlier. If someone tried to start a generalization like “a lot of blondes are smart” and turns out most people have a different experience, it won’t spread. People will just hear the generalization and think it’s ridiculous.

Of course there’s the phenomenon where you hear a stereotype and ONLY focus on the cases that confirm the stereotype and disregard cases that do NOT confirm the stereotype, thus some stereotypes are in fact merely hype. This doesn’t mean stereotypes are necessarily just hype however.

we’re not talking about physical characteristics yawn, we’re talking about stereotypes based on physical characteristics lol. i just don’t like it when ppl judge the characters of others based on similar appearances. It’s such an insult to people who happen to fit the physical characteristics of the stereotype. kkiiji argues that the generalization “a lot of blondes are dumb” is “practically factual,” but that such generalization cannot be proven wrong at the same time. So it’s proven practically to be true but cannot be proven to be wrong.

Notice that there’s the stereotype that a lot of stereotypes are just hype. Isn’t this the one you’re claiming? :D

I’m not disagreeing that it’s an insult to people that do not fit the stereotype Spooned, I’m arguing that stereotypes are MEANT to be general, they’re not meant to be absolute. Thus stereotypes necessarily have many exceptions, since they’re not supposed to apply to everyone.

Just because you don’t like it when people judge blacks based on a stereotype of their crime rate, it doesn’t make it false that a lot of blacks are criminals.

I think we’re better off claiming discrimination than “stereotypes are false”. I agree that it’s pretty lame to judge a stranger based on a stereotype about their “kind”, but I disagree that the stereotypes are to be treated as some kind of necessarily absurd statement.

lol kkiiji no stereotype is practically true, so allll are “hype.” you can’t prove it right just like you can’t prove it wrong. the only reason why ppl made stereotypes is because they are fearful of ppl looking different than them, but we should know better from being educated. gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh watevers

By the way this little exchange was just harmless fun for me, I have nothing against blacks, blondes, Koreans, or Mexicans. I just had nothing to do and decided to defend a position commonly under assault.

I’m not racist I swear. Lol
