I finally decided to transfer...is it too late?

I'm ending my sophmore year in college...however, I've decided pretty late in the game that this school is not for me at all. Is it too late to be choosey? I know that some schools are still accepting applications for Fall 08, but are my chances of getting into a spring 09 session okay?

depends on so many things. what type of school are you looking for? many top schools require that you spend at last 4 semesters there in order to graduate, so you might have to spend an extra semester in school if you want to apply for spring '09. then again, many of those same top schools are no longer taking transfers for fall '08. where are you now? what type of grades do you have? where do you think you want to go?

You've got 2 weeks for Northwestern lol.

Unfortunately, I go to San Diego State... and I think I'll end up with a 3.4 or something around there. I've taken difficult classes being a Bio major, but it's just I haven't been consistent and I've been pretty unmotivated because I'm unsure of my major/career still . My career counselor who works at UCSD thinks I'm not being challenged (i know, sounds dumb) and that I'm uninvolved at this school...just a bad mix of everything I suppose.

I guess I would want to go to a UC like UCSB...but I'm at a terrible disadvantage to Community College kids, and I think I am on the verge of having too many units to transfer there anyway.

don't mean to hijack your thread, confirmtransfer, but I have another question for the web community. I find it relevant to your topic.

If someone who has attended a community college has transfered to a UC and finished off his junior year there, but decides the school is not for him. Could he or she apply for a senior transfer (or forgo his junior year) and transfer as a junior to another school?

Why would you transfer as senior? UC schools are good. Just take it for one more year and you'll be good.

i dont understand the whole "too many credit" things.

Do schools reject you for having too many credits or do they accept you, but only accept an X number of credits?

They wouldn't reject you per se, they just wouldn't consider your application valid.

Kind of blue, where did you get that information. you would still be considered if you informed the schools as to why you have more credits than will transfer. you can have 500 credits and transfer, but a maximum of 60 (around that number depending on the school and program you choose) will transfer.

also, if you are not taking stimulating classes, and at that point, geared towards your major, it may not look so great. I am in a similar situation. I (assuming I am rejected from the schools I applied to for this fall) will be applying as a spring junior transfer from a CC. at that point I will have about 75 credits, but I am almost positive at least 10 are non-transferable.

Inform the school, and even speak to a few of the admissions people at the schools you are interested in. in almost all situations, you can and will be looked at just like any other prospective spring transfer student, even if you exceed the transferable credit limit.

I think Tulane is still accepting applications until June 1 along with some other schools.

Many top public and decent privates allow senior transfers if they're willing to complete the final 30 credits at the school.

thanks, Ferryboat.

You need to check with the schools. Some schools have different policies. But as ferryboat mentioned, most that I have seen require that you take at least 30 credit hours to be able to earn a degree from that school.

I'm actually pretty confident most schools require 60, not 30 credits before they'll grant a degree. Student35 is right though, check with each school, as there is no general rule of thumb.

Just to let you know if you decide to take the chance:
Northwestern and Lafayette college are still accepting transfer applications. May 1st is their deadline however, Lafayette will still accept application till June if you send them. Lafayette has an option where you can request your admission status by a specific date so if you apply there you might try to find out if you are in early and if you can attend for fall 08. Good Luck

As far as Spring 09, you can still apply because the deadline is pretty far. Some school will want you to spend two years on campus though even if you enter with a bunch of credits. Good Luck
