I Finally got Accepted

I finally got accepted at Texas tech university.
I have been admitted as a transfer student and will start as a sophomore in Bach of science in computer engineering for the spring 2011 semester.

I have also applied to Suny Buffalo and Sunyit and Texas dallas and arlington.
Along with Mississippi state Uni, Uni of toledo.

I need yours opinions on whether I should wait for Suny Buffalo and Texas Dallas ?

When comparing the Costs of living, weather conditions and over all campus life, will texas tech be a good options as compared to Buffalo or dallas?

And further more, is texas tech a good school for Computer engineering? It is placed lower to Suny buffalo in the US news rankings, but still i wanted your opinions.

And the final question, Will living in a city like Lubbock, which i have heard many calling a village, make it hard for me to find decent off campus jobs or internships and housing ?

Currently I am waiting for the letter of acceptance through mail.

Please let me know your sugestions guys ... its really helpful to me.

For your questions that are more about the schools and not specifically transferring, you might want to try posting on the Search & Selection or individual school forums.

Hi entomom, is it possible for you to move my thread to the appropriate forum? That would be really helpfull … or should i start a new thread?
And thanks for the advice …

what was your GPA? i was thinking about going to tech as well!

Which state do you live in?

how much will your parents pay each year?

I have also applied to Suny Buffalo and Sunyit and Texas dallas and arlington.
Along with Mississippi state Uni, Uni of toledo.

Guys i am an international student. My gpa was approx 2.5-3.0 for the years of education i did after my High school. But my highschool gpa was like 2.0 or even lower. My Toefl Score was 98 in ibt. I also had some final year project work, and DIY, along with losts of extra-curricular stuff attached to my application.

I dont yet know the number of credits that have been transferred as my courses are being evaluated.

Tech, if i am not wrong is around 15k per year for out of state students … so it kinda fits my budget.

Suny it and Suny buffalo are cheaper, but buffalo is hard to get into, im still waiting for their decision.

But based on my research, I had done the following list according to priority:-

Suny Buffalo
Texas Tech
Sunyit
Texas Dallas
Texas Arlington
Mississippi State uni
Univ of toledo
University of central missouri.

I had applied to all the above. Texas tech was lightening fast about their admission decision. all the other colleges have not yet started reviewing spring applications.

Based on the experience till now, I found texas tech people to be extremely helpful. I was in constant corrspodance with of the people from admissions and he help me out at every step, he cleared all my queries no matter how lame they sounded.

After i received the admission decision on 14 sept. Their counselors are now corresponding with me about my courses and have already started evaluating my credits.

All in all … i found the texas tech people very friendly and very helpful. and i am having second thoughts about waiting for decisions from other colleges.

Texas arlington has not yet updated their data base, and hence the online application is still showing that i have lots of outstanding items, inspite of them being received almost 3 weeks back.

The above is my opinion. But I am still keen to know about this from other people … who were student of texas tech, or suny buffalo. Or people who know about the main difference between these two colleges.

Tuition (30 hrs) …$14,670
Fees … $3,190
Room and Board …$7,966*

Books and Supplies…$1,000

Cost of Attendance…about $27,000 per year. (not counting transportation, personal expenses, and additional charges for taking more than 30 credits per year.)

http://www.admissions.ttu.edu/fastfacts.pdf

Note that the tuition only covers 30 credits per year. Engineers often have to take about 33-34 credits per year. That would add about another $2,500.

Also…TT charges a lot in fees - which makes the tuition seem lower than it really is. Did you note that?

What is your budget?

tuition is not a problem for now, I have enough money to pay all the expenses completely for around 3 years. And yes i knw the total costs will go till 28k.

And plus i have been admited as a sophomore, so most probably i will save a whole year, which will give me achance to complete the degree in 2.5-3 years itself … hopfully!

Congrats! I have a few friends who are either at Texas Tech right now, or just graduated. And I have a couple friends who will be starting next August. It’s a great option for you. My older friends have been able to get interesting off-campus summer positions during their last year or two of school and good jobs after graduation. They loved Lubbock. It’s really not much of a city outside of the school, but apparently it’s a great place to go to college.

thanks griffen, that is quite helpful, and especially helpful as you yourself are from texas. What you think should I consider Texas arlington or texas at dallas over texas tech, in case they provide a scholarship or something? Or will the degree from texas tech be a lot superior and out weigh the privilages of other universities?

Texas tech have got me worried now!!! … I asked them yesterday whether or not my admission is final, or will it be final after they evaluate my passed courses, i got a reply saying they will let me know soon.

Now I am real tensed, has anyone had this experience? Because the application website shows the I was admited on 14th, and the guy told me, i should expect an admission letter in about two weeks.

But I am still worried, please give me some inputs guys, can an admission be cancelled at later stages? …

Re-read the email that you sent to them, and their response. They may be responding to “How soon will I know which credits transferred?” rather than to “Did you really truly, admit me to your program?”

Heres my question:- Do I need to be worried? Is my admission final or will it be final after my courses are evaluated?

Heres the answer:- I have contacted the International Student office regarding admission. You or I should be hearing from them soon.

It shows on my Application status as “Transfer admit”. On my online student account under my school profile it show my class standing as “Sophomore” and program as “Pre-engineering”.

These things look pretty clear, but, can they cancel an admission in spite of that?

No they aren’t going to cancel your admission. You are in. You are a Sophomore. The questions that they are trying to resolve have to do with just exactly which courses they can give you credit for from your previous institution(s) and/or work experience.

You are in at Texas Tech, so you do have a place to go in January. Now you can wait to hear from the other places that you applied. If you are admitted anywhere else, you can decide then what to do.

Congratulations!

Thnx a lot for that re-assuring reply Happymomof1, you have no idea how glad I am. Basically i knew my potential … and applying to Texas tech was like shooting for stars, I was expecting to get admitted to Univ of toledo or texas arlington, but this was a very sweet surprise.

So i have a question for you, If the status says that I am a sophomore, then basically no matter what courses get transferred, will the 1st whole year be shaved off along with the 30-40 credits that it has? Or will i need to take more credits incase less courses are transferred?

What is the estimated time you think i’ll be able to complete the course if take summer classes as well?

And then again, What u think, should i wait for Suny buffalo, Suny It and texas Dallas? Are those three univesities really worth it? taking into account the weather, expenses and stuff?

The main problem I am seeing here is, that i am going to have to book my Air tickets immediatly because of the christmas rush. Even now I am having very little options for tickets directly to Lubbock, I’ll probably by a ticket to San francisco, visit my relatives, and then go to Lubbock latter.

When does the Spring term start exactly? so that I could book the ticket about 20-25 days before that just to be safe …

Will be waiting for you reply

Don’t know about the TX schools, but I know UB and SUNY-IT well. I would say UB is worth waiting for…SUNY-IT, not so much. UB is an experience in itself and seems to be a great place for international students. Contrary to common “knowledge”, Amherst is not buried in the winter and usually has milder winters and more sunny days than the rest of upstate NY. UB has done a good job with designing their main campus so that students really don’t have to spend much time outdoors in the winter unless they want to…there is no need at all to slog across campus in the dead of winter (although they keep the sidewalks and courtyards in good shape if you do). It’s a very nice campus with distinctive architecture, lakes, woods, and lots of green spaces, and tons of activities from sports to concerts, speakers, clubs, etc. It’s easy to get around and between the two main campuses (as well as airport and train station), plenty of nearby attractions/cities, and challenging academics.

SUNY-IT is a much smaller school, on the northern edge of Utica, a city which has seen much better days (although the school itself if fairly new and is well-kept). It just doesn’t have the same vibe as UB and there really isn’t a lot nearby for students to do. I understand that their academics are solid but, if you’re looking for the whole college experience and a diverse student body, you may be disappointed.

I think UB is probably $1-2K more in fees than Utica, although both charge the same tuition. Should be at or below the cost of Texas. Btw, there’s an abundance of off-campus housing near UB’s South campus that’s very reasonably priced. Good luck!

thanks for the reply sk8rmom…

Could you or happymomof1 please shed light on the above quoted queries that i had asked previously?

To find out when spring semester starts, do a search on their website for the academic calendar. Sophomore standing generally means you have at least 30, but less than 60, credit hours. How they articulate your prior coursework and what they’ll require you to take, and therefore how long it will take to get your degree, is something we can’t answer. You should be able to figure it out once they finish evaluating your transcript.
