I Finally got Accepted

Hmm sounds fair enough …

I went through the catalog it says that the semester will start on 12th Jan. and it says resident hall open occupancy as 9th of Jan.

Now does that mean that i wont be able to go on campus till 9th of Jan?

Do these people provide some place to stay incase i get a ticket early Jan?

Sk8rmom:= Unless Suny Buffalo also gives me a sophomore admit, and more credits transferred, I dont feel that I can get a better offer than what i got from Texas tech. And texas tech has a pretty good standing, its tier 1 and its ranked I think about 160 in the list. its ranked below Suny Buffalo ofcourse but its Ranked higher then the rest of the colleges I applied including Sunyit.

What u think? …

I went to Tech for my undergrad (UT for grad school). I consider myself a Raider first, Longhorn second, and I was disappointed at the outcome of last night’s game :frowning: (maybe next year). The people you’ll meet at Tech are some of the most friendly, genuine people in the world. There’s not an ounce of superficiality at Tech – what you see is what you get. This is one of the reasons I gave up a full ride to SMU and transferred to Tech my sophomore year. You definitely won’t find a kinder group of students.

For all the flack Lubbock sometimes gets, I thought it was a great town. It’s much bigger than other college towns (ex. Bryan/College Station), and there’s plenty to do. I believe the population, not including Tech students, is somewhere around 200,000 but don’t quote me. The weather is hot until about mid-Oct. Winters are much worse than most Texas towns. (Remember, you’re at the foot of the Rockies.) Compared to the north, Lubbock winters are balmy! The springs are the most volatile. Lubbock is part of the notorious tornado alley, and the spring wind/dust storms can be intense.

Academically, Tech is on par with other big state schools. It’s not on the level as say Berkeley or UVA, but it can hold it’s own against OU, U of Georgia, etc., etc. It definitely holds more prestige, IMO, than UTA and UTD. The size will avail you more networking opportunities. I felt prepared for grad school, and I believe Tech has a great career services department if you choose not to pursue post baccalaureate work. You had mentioned computer science…Tech is known for excellence in many fields: agriculture, horticulture, engineering, RHIM, education, atmospheric science, and computer science/MIS.

I can’t speak to the SUNY schools; however, I would choose Tech over the other TX schools on your list. Good luck!

Hey JC40, excellent review there!! … after reading your reviewing, now i am even more excited. just wish me luck for the further procedure …

The most important ticket for you to sort out right now is the one to the US, since you know you are indeed coming! You can purchase a separate ticket from San Francisco to Lubbock (or a different location if you are accepted elsewhere and decide to go to the other university) later.

If the dorms don’t open until January 9, and you need to be there earlier because of travel connections, contact the International Student Office. They may be able to put you in touch with someone you can stay with for a night or two.

Congratulations on your admission to Texas Tech. It’s a great school. You will like it. You are also interested in Buffalo? You have been living in India? You will probably find the weather in Lubbock to be lovely.

Have you applied for spring on-campus housing at Texas Tech? If you know you want to live on campus if you go to Texas Tech, you should start working on that,if you haven’t already. Apply for housing.

@MidwestMom2kids- Thank you very much … im very excited about the admission, especially now that I am getting good reviews from all your guys.
Well yes you are right about the weather, even I think that the weather in Buffalo will be brutal for me as compared to Lubbock, so basically I think I will be set with Texas tech for now.

I havent really planned about my housing yet, but i guess for the initial semester I will be living on campus itself. I have emailed the admissions office about the housing and when am i supposed to apply. So I am waiting for them to reply.

What is your recommendation? should i live on or off campus? how does it make a difference academically? … And will it be considerably cheaper to live off campus?

And in case I arrive a little early at Lubbock, does the university give me some temperry accomodation on campus? Or do i have to make reservations in a hotel?

It going to be a really difficult task for me to get an airline ticket for the 1st week of January, I might get a ticket for end of december maybe 31st or somthing …

If i take a flight to Dallas, how much will it cost me to go to lubbock? can i take a bus or somthing? Because, dallas and houston tickets are cheaper as compared to Lubbock due to the frequency.

Thanks a lot guys, i am looking forward to your replies…

DFW airport is about a 5 1/2 hour drive to Lubbock. You could take a Greyhound; however, that might put your price right back up there as if you flew direct. Southwest is the only major airline that flies into Lubbock. (The other majors have regionals that fly there, but I’m guessing it’ll be more expensive if you elect to choose them.) Once you get to San Francisco or LA or other major hub from whichever country you’re flying in from (India?), switch over to Southwest.

Without a car, you’ll have to live on campus. (Lubbock’s public transportation is very limited.) Most upper-classman live off-campus; however, since you’ll be a transfer/sophomore, I’d probably advise you live on campus your first year at Tech, then move off. (Plenty of upper-classman live on campus too.) Dorms at Tech vary accordingng to price/amenities, and you can rank your preferences. Some of the older ones have been renovated and are more conveniently located, but the newer ones have more amenities and are closer to the athletic complex. Be prepared to walk whichever side of campus you live on – Tech’s campus is huge and closed to driving during school hours (or at least it used to be.)

Hey guys just so you know, I got an email from University of Texas at Arlington today, saying i got admitted, and they have sent my I-20 and admission letter through courier.

I am just curious about this university as well, does anyone have any ideas about it?

Ofcourse my top priority still remains texas tech, but just cause UTA has accepted me, i could use some info about it as well …

From a Texas HS student’s point of view Texas Tech is wayyyy above UT-Arlington. Not a close call in terms of the education, prestige or the amount of opportunities on campus.

Living on campus at Texas Tech sounds like a great plan for your first semester.

Yes, i think living on-campus will let me get a little acustomed to the college. Plus I wont be having any transportation of my own when I arrive, so i guess that should be my best option.

By the way, the I-20 visa and the acceptance letter are in transit, as told by the counselor. So i think I will be getting it in another 3-4 business days.

I am yet to talk about the housing arrangements and financial support with the counselors.

Are they waiting to see this semester’s grades? are you in school NOW?

No I dont think so, they said they were going to transfer only the courses I have completed till now.

By the way I just received the Admission letter.

So i dont have any doubts about the admission now!! …

I go to UTA and I can say that they definitely get way too much flack from other schools. It takes a certain kind of student to look past football and see an education for what it really is. UTA is a baby in school years because it has only been a part of the UT system for 115 years. I can say that the current administration is doing a LOT to integrate the city of Arlington with the school.

My favorite part of UTA is the opportunity of the D/FW area. Drive 15-20 minutes either direction and there are so many places to go. You can get an internship in the heart of the 7th largest DMA while you take classes, which is a rare opportunity for many colleges.

I hear Tech is great but don’t knock out any school based on what people on this board say. It’s all about who you are and what you really want out of your education.

hey guys, just to update you.

I got accepted by, University of Toledo, Texas Arlington, and texas tech …

Uni of toledo has offered me a 2year course for the BS engineering degree, after transferring my credits.

Texas tech has accepted a Total of 60 credits, and will be using only 17 credit hours against my course.

Texas arlington has accepted a total of 80 credits, but hasent yet informed me about how many will be used against my course.

But still I have decided to go with Texas tech itself. I hope I have made a good decision.

My goal is to get an admission in Texas Austin or Texas A and M later on, Maybe transfer, or maybe for MS. I hope Texas tech provides as a good platform.

I had Some questions to people who had studied in Texas Tech at some point of time:-

What kind of on-campus jobs can i expect, and what is the frequency and average pay?

I am planing to go for Electronics and Computer engineering, I hope this a good choice, and the department is good?

Can International students be part of the football team?, Can they tryout atleast?

What kind of Gpa should I maintain, in order to maybe shoot for probable transfer to a better college later on.

Which companies often come to TTU for jobs?

Which Dorm should I choose? Which one is closer to the engineering building, or all in all a better and reasonable deal?

Is it better to stay off Campus?
