Essays: This is subjective isn't it? Spent good amount of time on it, went through 4-5 drafts got it proofread by teachers and other people. I felt my supplemental essay for GT was very strong- I referenced an experience with a current student and director who visited my school.

Teacher Recommendation: Called me one of the most talented students she has ever taught in her 8-year career

State: TX
School Type: 7 Years as top 25 school
Ethnicity: South Asian
Gender: M

Accepted to UTD, Texas A&M, Penn State, Purdue, and Case Western so far. I'm hoping that the fact that I go to a rigorous school and take a rigorous workload and my EC's make up for my GPA. Thanks for taking the time to chance me!

I understand this is more of a last minute tension relief thing, I get it.
SAT: Fine (However, your CR + M is 1420, last years average was 1460).
GPA: A little low, probably OK if you got to a competitive school.
Rigor: Looks fine to me. Have you taken a calculus class? I’m not sure if IB Math SL covers calculus. They like students who take a calculus class.
ECs: Fine, probably excellent.

I remember going to an orientation and btw, the adcoms mostly consist of young, white females. Probably in their late 20s. That’s who you are trying to impress.

It’s a match. Good luck.

Remember this is last years!! They haven’t said anything about this year!*

Here are the stats for this years freshman class. [Freshman Application | Admission](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission)
This year will probably be more competitive. You seem competitive and your ec’s should definitely help.

those stats are also last years btw. We are the 2014 class, not 2013. The article I gave was specifically for EA. And the most current acceptance rate for EA is 55%. This year, it is impossible that it will remain 50% because they had 12k applicants. It will have to be around 35%, or admit 4500-5000 people EA.

Of course. I guess I should have more clear…class who are freshman this year. We are still technically next years freshman class. I think they will hedge their bets and defer more than usual. It is just too easy to add another school to your common app. How many of these extra applicants would really consider tech. I know I added at least one school and considered others, none of which I’m most likely to choose if accepted. Other schools use demonstrated interest as a way to choose those most likely to attend. Tech has not used that in the past.

I’ve been watching these “chance me” on GT for a while and have been biting my tongue (or my nails) not to respond…however, with only 5 days away…You look like you have a great chance but so did my son who fell in the top 25% (1430/2180 or 1480/2230 superscored) last year except for his low 31/32 (superscored) ACT. Full IB Diploma and AP Scholar with Distinction - including all EC’s and volunteer hours, etc…in state. I looked up his school on GT snapshot page and it lists as a 12 in rigor where GT has an avg rigor of 8. He was deferred and then denied. Be sure you like your 2nd and 3rd choices - you just never know.

Well thats damn unfortunate. What was his GPA? You got to reign in your losses and move on.

I don’t recall off hand uw but his weighted was above 4.0 for each of his 4 years of high school - I’m guessing at 3.8 something - he was in the top 14% of his class though, not the top 10. He did move on immediately - his Dad and I on the other had still bite our lips when we have to pay tuition, even though he has a scholarship for out of state - Georgia schools are free tuition. Just be sure you have a good 2nd or 3rd school that you really LIKE, not just can get into. My son was not the only kid in his school that had high stats that did not get in and some of them don’t like the schools they ended up attending.

@threeofthree
Did your son apply EA or RD?

EA and deferred - don’t read anything into this… Some got in, some didn’t. Only when I see kids with an 1860 on their SAT say they get in does it thoroughly confuse me as to GT’s admissions. At Connect with Tech they said diversity does matter and it could be the demographics my son fell into was already filled at Tech.

Again just hope kids that think they have a good shot have a great 2nd choice.

Thanks for the heads up @threeofthree, I’ll definitely keep that in mind. And you’re right, it puzzles me as well when like you said, people with >2000 SATs get in, but those with <2100 don’t.

And if you don’t mind sharing, what is the GT snapshot page you mentioned?

Edit: Never mind, I think this is what you were referring to: http://www.irp.gatech.edu/facts-and-figures/georgia-tech-impact-georgia-high-schools/#

^^^^yes, that’s the site …good luck to everyone on Jan 4!

My school has a 53% rate… not bad.

^^^thats over a period of years - don’t recall how far back but is not representative of recent years.

@ threeofthree there was another person here who currently attends GA Tech after being admitted last year with a 1820 SAT and strong GPA. So im guessing it is possible to be accepted if your stats are below the mid average? Also, its very surprising your son got denied with an SAT in the top 25%.

I derailed this thread and that was not my intent - really, just make sure you like your second choice, not just a “safety” but you really could see yourself attending and enjoying the school.

OP- My DS is a freshman at GT this year. There were some of kids at his school that weren’t accepted that I thought would have been. So it’s really hard to say what they are looking for. Your unweighted GPA seems low but they supposedly are only going to look at the weighted one so it may be fine. The real problem with chancing this year is that in years past they recalculated everyone’s GPA. Now they aren’t doing that so it’s hard to say. The only thing I can think of is for you to recalculate your GPA like they did in years past and that might give you a better idea how it stands up to the kids from last years GPA. I think the way they did it was they only count English,Math,Science,Social Studies and Foreign language classes and then they added .5 on for AP or IB classes.
Note gifted and honors course do not get extra weight and they don’t use what you got in PE, Band or any other non academic classes in your GPA.

I don’t think you will be denied in EA. I’m just not sure whether you will be admitted or deferred.

@MichiganGeorgia
Did they include Dual Enrollment classes in the GPA recalculation?

I’m not sure… but I assume so. But I don’t know if they would get the .5 added on. Although I would think they would.

Yeah ofc they weight dual enroll, specially if you do the distance calculus thing. Calc II was surprisingly easy. Maybe Calc III will be way harder.
