So i signed up for two online classes this semester which are 8 week long and started the second 8 weeks of school which i later decided i didnt need but i completely forgot about them and today i was on my school webpage when i remembered, and i missed the no W deadline by two days. I havent taken any of the quizzes, bought any books or signed up for any of the online stuff for either class. If i call the school and talk to them would they let me drop it without the W? If they don't how badly will the W's affect my chances of being admitted to schools when i apply???? Please helppp im freaking out!!

PS. im planning on taking both classes next semester, will the W be replaced with the grade i receive in those two classes?

Generally colleges will NOT consider your pleas and you will get a W. The deadline is exactly that: a deadline. Are you a high school student or in college looking to transfer? One or two W’s out of many credits on a transfer transcript will not affect you too much, but accumulating a bunch will not reflect well on your ability to successfully manage college. If you are currently in college and receiving financial aid, too many W’s can also affect your financial aid in this semester and in subsequent ones.

If you currently a high school student taking these classes online, these W’s may have some affect on your applications to colleges. Again, it will look like you started something that you couldn’t finish. And explaining the W’s by saying, “I forgot I was taking them” does not reflect positively on you. The good news is that if you do retake the course, your transcript will show the new grade. The bad news is, the transcript will also show the W. You can never get rid of that from your transcript.

I am sure you do not intend to repeat this mistake again, but you should definitely work on your organizational skills, because this is a skill that will be very important to you throughout your college career. I am not trying to make you feel worse than you already do, but as a college professor I can tell you that one of the main reasons that students struggle in college is not because they are not smart enough to do the work, but because they lack basic skills to stay on top of the work. Use this experience as a lesson and some good can come out of it.
