I’ll look into that. She’s not financially savvy. Thanks.
I’m looking into doing the same for my mom who died 20 years ago and although the form is kind of long and at first glance seems a bit daunting because of all the info it asks for, the only official form I need is her death certificate.
Good luck to your friend and I hope it works out for her!
Well, as it turns out apparently her sister (the executor) doesn’t want to “try and find” the death certificate - I suggested that my friend apply for a copy, but now she’s feeling overwhelmed. It’s too bad really, they’re leaving real $ on the table, but there isn’t much more I can do…even though I would.
You can easily get a copy of marriage, birth, death certificate from the city hall.
See tips for contacting Vital Statistics or Records for a death certificate.
This is easier than buying a book on Amazon. Seriously. And I cannot fathom an executor who does not have a file folder with all the relevant documents…
Not our city hall in VA. You can get the marriage license from the clerk of court (next door), but not birth and death certificate. I think you can get those from the local health dept. my coworkers D gets them there (funeral business), but I don’t know if that’s for everyone.
Still, applying online is really easy. I had to do it for younger S’ birth certificate since I thought it was lost.
I’ve known for quite some time that my mom (deceased) has a couple hundred bucks I can claim from California, but I don’t know how to do it. Will someone who has done so let me know what you had to do to prove you’re the beneficiary or whatever? (NOTE - my mom died without a will and I am an only child if that matters).
TIA
There will be a tab on the Treasurer of California’s website for unclaimed property which will have as one of the FAQ’s-- parent died intestate, what do I do?
Click it. It will likely have a form for you to fill out. If there is no form, there will be an 800 number. Your situation is not unusual! But you will need a death certificate…
Thanks - I actually just ran across her death certificate, which made me think maybe I should try to claim the funds. There are several small amounts, and one close to $100. I guess I might as well try.
One of my deceased brothers had a number of uncashed checks, which another brother found while working on the estate. He also had not filed income taxes in several years. The uncashed checks helped to pay the back taxes/penalties.
Just received and mobile deposited my check for $152.
How cool!!!
Do I win the prize? $2,531.11!
I submitted a claim on behalf of my deceased father - took a couple of tries to upload the supporting documents because it was very picky about how attachments could be named. It would reject the submission and make me start all over again.
I just got my claim check. $200! I still don’t know why. It’s a Life Insurance Company I don’t remember. Best guesses are at work they switched policies about 12ish years ago - We pay for half of the premiums. But I don’t know why I would have $$$ there? Or maybe someone died and I was a beneficiary? My grandma died 5 years ago, but I don’t recall my siblings or anyone mentioning it? But once I put in my SSN, they said it matched and issued a check immediately.
But as I mentioned before, I did this a few years ago (3?) and I got 3 tiny checks, but this one wasn’t there.
