I get the impression many/most New Yorkers despise NYU students

Can any students (or alumni) tell me what their experiences with natives are like?

edit: I shouldn't say most, but there're definitely some strong feelings out there. Particularly outside the village.

I disagree: it is primarily people within the village that dislike NYU students. They’re upset NYU is expending and destroying so much of the neighborhood, and because they’re tired of drunken, loud NYU kids peeing on their stoops at 3am lol :stuck_out_tongue: NYU is expensive and people associate that will “spoiled” even though most of are up to our ass in debt. Let’s face it: at every college people get drunk and party, it’s nothing special about us. Most of us worked hard to get here, harder than the average HS kid for sure.

I notice in the comments section of NY Times/Curbed articles people often put down NYU - based on their attitudes you would guess they all have PhD’s from Harvard

On the other hand, I get asked a lot at Dunkin Donuts/Starbucks/random places in NYC if I’m an NYU student and I’ve never heard anything bad. People often make comments about how it’s such a selective school, and ask me what I’m majoring in. They usually act impressed when they hear I’m a science major on a scholarship and do research and whatnot. I’ve never heard anyone say bad stuff about students in person, but I realize that friction exists between us and the community.

I kind of consider myself a New Yorker. I was born in Manhattan and lived here until I was 6; then I moved to a suburb close to the city, moved back here when I was 17 for college and plan to stay. My family settled in NYC about 400 years ago and have lived here on-and-off.

"On the other hand, I get asked a lot at Dunkin Donuts/Starbucks/random places in NYC if I’m an NYU student "
Do you do anything to make yourself seem like an NYU student? It seems so random to just ask someone lol XD!

If you are downtown, a lot of tourists will automatically assume NYU.
If you are uptown, tourists will assume you are from Columbia.

To tourists, those are the ONLY two “big name” colleges in Manhattan. They don’t know about CUNYs or New School. They MIGHT know Cooper Union, Parsons and FIT.

I AM a “native” New Yorker, and the contempt that New Yorkers have for both Columbia and NYU is not unique. Any town that is not a hardcore college town (not a college town like Madison, Ithaca, Boston) will have some sort of friction with the local college. That’s why there’s a term for it; “town and gown relations”.

Trust me, they know about Baruch and Hunter, that’s for sure. I work in the city and there are several people who come from out of state to look at schools. The top three schools these tourists look at are always Columbia, NYU, and Baruch.

Huh? I haven’t even heard of Baruch…

Missamericanpie is right, it’s the whole “Town and gown” relations. Because we’re in NYC, everything happens at a larger scale. Local businesses sometimes offer discounts to NYU students, so it’s not like we’re completely unwelcome :] The absense of 40,000 or so students would make a big difference to this community.

Haha actually I’m quite the opposite of the stereotypical “artsy hipster” - I’m sciency and dress kind of preppy. Often random people ask on the subway or coffee places if I’m an NYU student because i’m carrying a huge bio text or something.

Whoever said “downtown NYU” and “uptown Columbia” was so right - I briefly lived in Morningside Heights. It was awkward explaining I was only there for cheap housing lol! I’m sure it’s the same with Fordham in the Bronx. Cooper Union students must get tired of being asked if they go to NYU - their campus is technically within our campus map…

I’ve been to Cooper Union Open Houses / Accepted Students Day (my brother goes there) and the faculty there likes to crack jokes about how huge NYU is. They do not like having their brand new sparkling building being mistaken for another NYU expansion hahah.

Trust me, NYU does NOT want that building to their name. :stuck_out_tongue:

(I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Cooper Union is a fantastic school, someone I knew in high school was accepted to Cooper and he was freaking brilliant.)

Haha I can’t wait til the day NYU attempts to buy Cooper as our new Architecture/Engineering school - not that CU would allow themselves to be bought by Big Violet!

I’m jealous of Cooper students because they don’t have tuition. My friend goes there; she was a B student in HS but an amazing artist - you need to be really talented to get in. What’s funny is her dorm is on the NYU map, but my dorm (26th St) is not on the campus map even though it’s an NYU dorm! As for Columbia, after living in Morningside heights, the only thing I’m jealous of is their proximity to Dinosaur Barb-b-que :p

What ****es me off about Cooper’s new building is if NYU built it, the Village would burn it down. But they all seem to adore Cooper :/

@alix

Eh, their history with the Village isn’t as strained as ours.

That Cooper Union hometest is insane, I saw my friend put theirs together and I was soooooooo impressed.

I NEVER seem to meet people from Cooper Union when I’m out and about, though. I run into students from other random schools, but never anyone from Cooper. Strangest thing. Though, wth is up with that “New York Film Academy Cafe”? I saw that and did a double take. Eyesore.
