Essay:
I wrote about my father's death and came to America.

I know my stats are pretty normal compare to other people who apply to Cornell ED, but I am just gonna apply for it because I don't want to go other than Cornell right now..
Give me some advice that I can bring up my stats. I will really appreciate it.
(I am applying to College of Arts and Sciences.)

First of all, I want you to know that Cornell is very great school, especially in engineering. However, you should also know that transportation to Cornell is a bit of an issue. If they do accept you, check out which transportation methods work best for you. Some air routes - especially from my city - cost over $1K round-trip.

You have obviously performed very well in high school with a 3.951 UW GPA. Great job! However, achieving such a high grade point does not mean anything if you haven't challenged yourself in HS with AP or Honors classes? Sometimes, when it comes down to a student with a 4.0 with regular classes and a student with a 3.8 with Honors/AP classes, a college would go for the latter because the 3.8 can handle coursework better than the 4.0. Your ACT score is great and places you within cornell's mid 50 percentile range. You are obviously involved in High School, but make sure that you actuallly enjoy what you do and demonstrate passion in them. You can convey this in your essay. Your Awards and Honors are few in number and is honestly not the golden part of your app. Colleges typically do not look at honors from schools.

As a side note, Cornell will be very interested in hearing your story about your father's death (especially if it was later in your life) and your move here to America. Show them how you overcame such significant obstacles and how it made you a strong person. Colleges like people who overcome adversity.

Overall, your chances are pretty good, considering the unique position you're in. I would like to rate you a match for Cornell, but of course nothing is a gurantee for admissions and I'm not an admissions officer, just a HS kid who spent his entire summer on CC.

Thank you so much!! You encouraged me so much!
I took about 11 honors classes and only 2 AP classes...:((AP Calc, AP Stat)
Just you know, my school is using block scheduling, and this term I have only one honor and three general classes. Those three classes are Senior Civic(require to graduate), Student Senate(you have to take it if you are in senate), and Pre-College class in college. (I was gonna take Calc 2 there, but then I figured I need to improve my reading skill....so...yeah..) Do you think it will affect my application proccess? because I know people who apply to cornell are taking more than 4 AP classes right now....:(
Also, I am an international student, but I didn't take Toefl test. In Cornell website, they wrote, The TOEFL/IELTS is waived for applicants who score 670 or higher on the verbal or critical reading portion of the SAT; and the TOEFL/IELTS is waived for applicants who have completed more than two years of secondary and/or post-secondary schooling in the U.S.
I am guessing I don't have to take it, but is it better to take it? I never studied Toefl before, I don't know I can get a minimun of 100. Any advice??

I am very impressed you were accomplish all that after moving to America in 8th grade. Must have been hard with the lacking english and all the other difficulties. Best of luck!

I think you have an ok shot . You've done fairly well in high school. Try re taking the act to get a 33ish or better because you don't have a great number of Ap's and your intellectual potential evaluation may be better with this!
I did not see any subject tests up there! If you take them, make sure you got high 700's ! That plus a killer ACT will help you definitely.
the toefl should be a breeze with your already 31 ACT score . I'm international too, Toefl' s way too easy to worry about!
Write your essays well, keep the grades up and yes good luck!
